Haven - June 29, 2005 Stardate 41294.5. The Enterprise is approaching the Class M Beta Cassius planet known as Haven. Picard informs us that it is a world known for its mystical healing powers, and that legends surrounding the planet have said to mend souls and heal broken hearts. Data is skeptical; however, Picard assures him that often times legends have a way of coming true. Riker is seen in his Quarters listening to music played on harp-like instruments by two females. One of them is right-handed, while the other is left-handed. The music sounds bimodal, and a clearly-defined tonal center is lacking. For this reason I found the music to be interesting. Yar asks Riker to come to the transporter room. A silver, rectangular box-like object which has a face on it is beamed aboard, and once Troi's voice is heard, the object comes to life, foretelling of the wondrous day that is to occur between a member of the Miller family and Troi. The box opens up, and precious jewels fall out. Troi informs us that these are bonding gifts given to those whom are to be married, and she informs us that it is she whom is to be married. (N.B.: The character inside the box is played by Armin Shimerman (Quark)). Troi informs Picard that she will not be remaining with the ship. Picard congratulates her, and one can see that Riker is visibly upset. Stephen Miller, his wife, and his son Wyatt, beam aboard. Stephen states that the ship is impressive, and that he would like to see more of it. We are informed that Wyatt Miller is a man betrothed to be married to Deanna. He presents Deanna with a chameleon rose. This rose changes color depending on the mood of its owner. I was reminded of the 'mood rings' of the 1960s and 1970s. Luwaxana Troi, Deanna's mother, beams aboard. Once aboard she begins to 'speak' to Deanna using telepathy. Her assistant, Mr. Homn, is about seven feet tall, and is not a being of many words. He is a personal valet, and is the successor to Mr. Xelo. Mr. Xelo is said to have been dismissed for making improper advances (in thought only) toward Luwaxana. A transmission from the planet from Valeda Innis informs Picard and crew that a ship has been detected on their long-range sensors. This ship is said to have violated their space. Valeda Innis is referred to as the 'first woman' of Haven, and she is also given the title of 'Electerine.' In a conversation between Troi and Wyatt, we learn that Wyatt is a medical doctor, and that healing people is his first passion. He is also an artist. Troi remarks that she's only ever felt this strongly about one other person before, and that this person is currently serving on the Enterprise. She does not mention Riker by name during this exchange. Wyatt has painted three portraits, all of the same woman. He mentions that these portraits are of a woman whose face he has seen (in his mind) almost every day of his life ever since he was a child. A Tarellian ship is identified as the vessel that has violated their space. Once the ship is identified, Picard is extremely concerned, and we learn that years ago there was a major war on Tarella (a Class M planet) between two opposing groups, at which time one of the groups created a deadly biological weapon in the hopes of destroying the other. However, this weapon eventually destroyed both sides in this war. The last Tarellian ship was believed to have been destroyed eight years ago, by the Alcyones (in 2356). Near the conclusion of a briefing, Picard announces the prejoining event which will take place between Troi and Wyatt. Picard invites those present to join in the festivities. He remarks that any help in this matter would be appreciated, and that it is purely voluntary. At hearing this news, Riker turns his back on those present and walks out of the room. Since participation in the ceremony is voluntary, it is understandable the Riker be allowed to leave as he did. There is a banquet in honor of Deanna and Wyatt. Most of the senior staff is present at this dinner in their honor. During the banquet, Mr. Homn is seen bowing at almost every available opportunity. Mr. Homn is also responsible for ringing a dissonant (and annoying) bell which coincided with the conclusion of some of the exchanges that are taking place, and this ringing is gradually getting on the nerves of those present. Luwaxana informs us that the ringing of the bell is the Betazoid way of giving thanks for the food. The bell is rung nine times before it is overturned (during a tenth ring) by Deanna. Troi refers to Riker as 'Bill' (and not 'Will') twice in the episode. Brent Spiner's characterization of Data still appears somewhat stiff in the delivery of some of his dialogue, especially those segments while he is on the Bridge. It seems as though he is still trying to find his way with regard to how Data ought to behave (and speak) as an android. Valeda Innis informs Picard that she wants the Enterprise to destroy the Tarellian ship. Instead, Picard opts to place a tractor beam on the ship. We learn that there are eight Tarellians on board their ship, that all have the deadly virus, and that these eight are all that are left of the species. Stardate 41294.6. The Enterprise is orbiting Haven with the Tarellian vessel held in its tractor beam. Wyatt goes to the transporter room, and using a hypospray he stole from Sickbay, knocks out the transporter attendant. He then changes the coordinates, and beams over to the Tarellian ship to be with Ariana. Wyatt brings medicine with him to the Tarellian ship. On the viewscreen, he informs his mother and father that he will continue to try to find a remedy for the plague. In the transporter room, Luwaxana asserts that Captain Picard is strongly attracted to her. Realizing that this goal is implausible, she thinks about setting her sights on someone else, and that 'someone' is Riker. Troi then intervenes, informing her mother that he (Riker) has 'other obligations.' Picard is not amused by this breach of privacy concerning his thoughts toward Luwaxana. Notable lines: "As you must have heard, genetic bonding is a Betazoid tradition." (Troi). "Come dance at my wedding." "I'll try." (Troi and Riker). This occurs in the midst of a conversation whereby Troi reminds Riker that his greatest wish is to 'Captain a starship.' He informs her that although this is true, it is not the only thing that he wants out of life. In retrospect, I found this sequence fascinating, as Riker will indeed dance at Troi's wedding one day (in Nemesis). Little did Riker know at the time that it would also be his wedding at which he danced with Troi. "So. You're not totally out of practice. Good. Very good." (Luwaxana). This line is in response to Troi having used telepathy with her mother while in the turbolift, enroute to Luwaxana's Quarters. Luwaxana is quite pushy, and has pushed Deanna enough at this point, which prompted her to respond using this Betazoid technique. "Your mother's honest. I respect that." (Wyatt). "An earth wedding? Ridiculous!" (Luwaxana). A conversation is taking place between Luwaxana and Victoria Miller, and the two of them are not seeing eye-to-eye regarding the wedding plans. Luwaxana raises her voice quite loudly in response to a wedding suggestion voiced by Victoria Miller. "Considering the rate at which you imbibe, sir, is your lineage ... at all mixed with human?" (Data). This is Data asking Mr. Homn a question, and it is one of the funnier lines in the episode. The reaction of Mr. Homn is priceless--he's been inadvertently insulted, and he turns his head away from Data while simultaneously raising his nose in the air, intimating wonderful snobbery on his part. Equally funny is Data then mimicking Mr. Homn's raised chin, looking upward as well, trying to see what it is he believes Mr. Homn is trying to see. "Could you please continue the petty bickering? I find it most intriguing." (Data). Easily the funniest line of TNG to this point in the series. Deanna is tired of the petty bickering that is occurring between her mother and Victoria. She gets up to leave, and overturns the bell as she storms out of the room, voicing her displeasure. Mr. Homn bows at her departure, and we cut to Data uttering this wonderful line. "I'm no longer Imzadi to you?" (Troi). During this exchange between Troi and Riker, we are informed that 'Imzadi' means 'beloved'. "And the human heart is too small to permit that now?" (Troi). "The Captain will do the ceremony, and Mr. Homn will be my best man." (Wyatt). This conversation takes place between Wyatt and Deanna. He is explaining how the two parties came to a compromise regarding the wedding. He mentions that Luwaxana relented, and that the rest were shamed into it (i.e., changing their minds). Some of the wedding party will attend while naked, while others will not. This too is part of the compromise. "The woman in Wyatt's drawings!" (Troi). This line is spoken the moment Deanna sees Ariana on the viewscreen. "Fascinating, Wyatt. How easily your thoughts come through." (Luwaxana). Although the line may appear to sound condescending, it really is not. Luwaxana is simply telling the truth, and that truth reveals that Wyatt is in love with someone else. "Tell me something, Wyatt. Which of these would look best on me naked?" (Luwaxana). Luwaxana is holding up two outfits. Wyatt wants to have a serious discussion with Deanna's mother, but she continues (ostensibly) to evade his questions. For my own part, I did not take this diversion to be an evasion, but rather saw it as a way to 'break the ice,' so to speak. In other words, Luwaxana has heard every word he has spoken. "And I knew you would be this brave." (Ariana). Wyatt's future wife knew that his coming over to her ship was inevitable. "Thank you for the drinks." (Mr. Homn). When I first heard this line some eighteen years ago, I was completely surprised. I doubt anyone thought that Mr. Homn had the ability to speak. It was a very nice way to conclude the episode. |

Please continue your petty bickering. In an otherwise average episode, I loved that entire scene.
