I've always loved this episode and think it's really underrated, but it's been a few years since I last saw it, so I decided to pop in the DVD and watch this episode tonight. I still love this episode and consider it one of the series (Not just the seasons) forgotten best episodes. It had so much intreque, mystery, picard doing what he does best which was Archeology, Picard ordering Earl Gray for the first time, romulans, and for the late 80s, outstanding visual effects. I mean it looked scary the way the Yamato was distroyed and seeing that virus on the Enterprise making it as Geordi says a Time Bomb was great. I do have a question about this episode though, even though it's going to be on the basis of speculation. We are told that early legends made the Iconians warriors, yet that was kind of proven to be inaccurate. If they were a peaceful people, what are the advantages of having the Gateway, when even though it's nice to travel just paints a target on your back in the eyes of your enemies? I mean it almost fell into the hands of both the Romulans and Jem'Hadar, and thier enemies would attack out of fear. In the long run, the gateway might have been the cause of the bombardment (We can't be sure). Other than cool travel, I really can't see the advantages of this advanced technology. |

You're right about this episode. A definite stand out from the second season. One of the episodes that gave me hope for the series. As far as the implications of the Gateway. It's possible that its use may have played a role in the fear of the Iconians. I can't quite remember the line used but either Picard or Data indicated that they were referred to as demons. However, just the Gateway by itself would not have been enough to frighten others. Perhaps the Iconians were not conquerors, in the military sense of the word, but instead had a tendency to interfere with other worlds in other ways. Sort of showing "more primitive" societies their own better way? |

This was a good episode! I also liked the DS9 follow up. |

The DS9 follow-up was alright, but it lost it's focus with the battle scenes. I thought the ending was too abrupt too. |

Well, there was that I suppose. But at least it wasn't forgotten. |

This is a fabulous episode. It's also solid SF. Likely the Ikonians experimented with technologies that other races found intimidating; this doesn't necessarily mean that they were malicious. Perhaps the Iconians developed this technology to escape from their enemies. The destruction of the Yamato and the Romulan involvement was well done. I agree; good special effects and an eerie presentation of the Ikonian "control room". Plus what happens to Data is an interesting plot twist, thus lending the solution of "rebooting" the Enterprise computer systems. |
