I have a lot of respect though for TNG because it revitalized the franchise. It's not only responsible for attracting millions of new fans like myself, but it also gave Paramount the hutzpah to come out with DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. |

I think TNG has been getting a lot of flack because of it's overly PC nature. There is very little conflict between the people on the ship, it's constantly stated that mankind is more evolved and doesn't give in to violence or corruption. Starfleet is always in the right, except in Insurrection which came out the last year of DS9, so I don't know if you can really count that. But I still love TNG. It's what got me into Star Trek in the first place. Patrick Stewart is one of the finest actors ever to play in science fiction and we're lucky to have had 7 years of stories. However, since watching DS9 in its entirety, I have come to hold Star Trek to a higher standard. Call it snobbish, but it's the best damn series because of the depth of characterization and the consistancy of the writing staff. |

And that is why it was a good series. It was a sign of the times, and it did say that diplomacy should always be used first, than shoot later. Besides, we are in a overly PC society today. TNG isn't as bad in terms of PC as it is today. |

I think that the resentment toward PC is part of what people count against TNG. |

And perhaps this is one of the greatest differences between Kirk and Picard, and their respective series. However, some of this must have to do with the times, although I'm not confident to describe precisely what these differences between the times are in one post. |

Exactly. It's just a different time. When Kirk was Captain of the Enterprise, the US was in the middle of the Cold War and a number of proxy wars. By the end of the 80s, it was becoming clear that the USSR was not the threat is used to by Gorbechev was all too eager to seek peace. It wasn't uncommon to see him and Reagan hanging out together in the news. And again in the early 21st century, the US is at war again, and the mood is much more aggressive and war-oriented. |

I guess I'm in a minority because I do feel (Strongly maybe) that TNG is just as important today than it was 20 years ago. Yeah mankind was a bit arrogent (personally, I didn't notice) but it was that future that we must all try our hardest to achieve. A time in which there is no threat of war, and grown-ups actually act like grown-ups for a change and seek diplomatic solutions to problems. You know I hate the current war, and I pray one day that there will be peace in our world. Until then, TNG is a great portrayal of what I want, and it escapes me from the crap of our society. PC or not, I think that was TNG's greatest strangth, a dream of what it was like if we all just grew the hell up. |
