Childhood schoolyard games and memories

What games did you play as a kid?

I'm talking about the kids games you played on the school yard - not video or board games.

I have a workshop tommorrow (Friday morning) and need some. I've got stuff off the internet, but thought some first hand advice would be good.

Names and simple rules would be appreciated. We only have to entertain them for an 90 minutes.

Note: Since the time limit for the above has passed, I thought that I would just adapt this thread and move it to KickBack.

Were you looking for answers from the overseas members?

I think the games I played were pretty much the same as the American members here. Games like Red Rover and Red Light Green Light. Oh, and What Time is it Mr. Wolf

When I was in Elementry school we used to play "marbles" a lot. We'd roll them down a pathway that was outlined by chalk and try and win baseball cards and other marbles. Mostly the boys did this while the girls played hopscotch.

Other than that, it was playing keepaway with Franko's cap and then stomping it into a mud puddle. It's so endearing to think of the entertainment that brought to my classmates.

We played What Time is it Mr. Wolf, we also played a lot of football - usually using a tennis ball.

Hide-o (Which is hide and seek) and er... fighting!

Any country other than the US actually (although now everyone is invited to participate).

I've never heard of What time is it Mr. Wolf?.

Perhaps we should keep the thread going to give others the chance to share childhood playground memories.

I actually am not the teacher for this thing ... I'm the coordinator of the overall event. All but this instructor has just expanded the activities guidelines and their kids are having a great time. This one is having trouble being flexible enough for a group of kids. If an activity says it should take 20 minutes, she plans 20 minutes.

What time is it Mr. Wolf? - Well, basically, you choose someone to be the "wolf" and they turn their back, and er... well, I thought I remembered the rules, but I obviously don't!

Min should know...

^^^ The group asks "What time is it Mr. Wolf" and the Wolf says a time, like maybe 3 o'clock. The group takes 3 steps forward (or 5 steps for 5 o'clock, etc...)

When the wolf thinks the group is getting close to them he answers "lunchtime", turns around and tries to catch someone. If he is successful the person he catches becomes the new wolf.

We used to play 'leanies,' 'farsies,' and 'topsies.' We had cards from our favorite sports teams and from our favorite television series. Each of the three games had rules, but suffice it to say that the object of the game was to 'win' as many cards from your opponent as you could. It was a lot of fun.

I recall playing Duck, Duck, Goose in my earliest days of formal schooling.
Then came the other games that have been mentioned here. Redlight, Greenlight; Mother, May I; Red Rover, Red Rover.
Didn't anyone else play Marco Polo in the pool during the summer?
Of course, Kickball was a huge game on the school playgrounds of my youth. As was Tetherball.
But I think my favorite game of all was Upstairs, Downstairs. I can't believe no one else has mentioned that one.
What a great game.
Ah, the memories.

Memories...
Like the corners of my mind.
Misty water-colored memories...
Of the way...

We were.

As a child, we played kick ball (similar to baseball, but no bat and you kick a ball), basketball, football and soak em' (Dodgeball). Those were the days!

Anybody here play base soccar?

I think my elementary PE teacher made it up. It's just like baseball only the "pitcher" rolls a soccar ball to home plate and you kick it as hard as you can. All the other rules are the same. If it's caught in the air you're out, and if not it's thrown to the next base.
