shirley?

My mom wanted to name me Mary Elizabeth, but my dad thought those were too common and he went with Tonya and my mom came up with Lacey.

I prefer Mary Elizabeth to Tonya Lacey.

I prefer Tonya to Mary. Mary rhymes with Scary! Imagine what you would have had to go through in school!

So let me ask you this rose what happens if a child is born right after your naming ceremony, do they go three weeks with out a name. Or is it just a formality?

Sorry, Dante, I forgot to reply to this.

It's a religous formality. Sometimes people will even wait a month or two until extended family members can be present.

It's the first time the child's name is entered on the church rolls. If the father is a priesthood holder, he also "blesses" his child by giving a prayer that includes his hopes for the young one. If not, another male family member who is will say the prayer.

I was named after my father, but not directly enough to be called "junior". The story that goes with that has to do with certain liberites taken by the priest that baptized Dad when he was a baby. Seems at the time (much earlier in the 20th century) the priest did not think that Dad's given name was "Christian enough" and so during the baptism altered it. Dad must have thought it amusing to give me that name...

On Mom's side there was a tradition for a few generations where they would pass down the father's name reversing the first and middle names of the first born male child each generation (i.e. A-B --> B-A --> A-B, and so on). This lasted until it got to my uncle's oldest boy who completely scrapped the tradition. Other cousin's kept it going in their own way however.
