Great choices. Thanks to all for posting the lyrics, too. Defiant, any chance you could do so for the tune you chose? |

If this thread is drifting into a general comparison and comments regarding lyrics, maybe we should ask D&D to change the thread's title to something more appropreate?

Not a problem at all, but you may want to start a new topic as it might otherwise get confusing. |

That's a tough one to answer. To me his best song is Piano Man, a somewhat offbeat story of a musc lounge performer's life base on his own life experiences. |

I think I'd go with Goodnight Saigon or the tune mentioned by Defiant. But I'm not an expert on Joel's song texts, either. |

^^^ I think you already know my choice. Scenes From An Italian Restaurant once again. It's a story about how we all dream about how our lives will be and the reality of what our lives actually become. I should post the lyrics. |

(From Dante's original link) Scenes From An Italian Restaurant The Stranger Released: 1977 A bottle of white, a bottle of red Perhaps a bottle of rose instead We'll get a table near the street In our old familiar place You and I--face to face A bottle of red, a bottle of white It all depends on your appetite I'll meet you any time you want In our Italian Restaurant. Things are okay with me these days Got a good job, got a good office Got a new wife, got a new life And the family's fine We lost touch long ago You lost weight I did not know You could ever look so good after So much time. I remember those days hanging out At the village green Engineer boots, leather jackets And tight blue jeans Drop a dime in the box play the Song about New Orleans Cold beer, hot lights My sweet romantic teenage nights Brenda and Eddie were the popular steadies And the king and the queen of the prom Riding around with the car top down and the radio on Nobody looked any finer Or was more of a hit at the Parkway Diner We never knew we could want more than that out of life Surely Brenda and Eddie would always know how to survive. Brenda and Eddie were still going steady in the summer of '75 When they decided the marriage would be at the end of July Everyone said they were crazy "Brenda you know you're much too lazy Eddie could never afford to live that kind of life." But there we were wavin' Brenda and Eddie goodbye. They got an apartment with deep pile carpet And a couple of paintings from Sears A big waterbed that they bought with the bread They had saved for a couple of years They started to fight when the money got tight And they just didn't count on the tears. They lived for a while in a very nice style But it's always the same in the end They got a divorce as a matter of course And they parted the closest of friends Then the king and the queen went back to the green But you can never go back there again. Brenda and Eddie had had it already By the summer of '75 From the high to the low To the end of the show For the rest of their lives They couldn't go back to the greasers The best they could do was pick up the pieces We always knew they would both find a way to get by That's all I heard about Brenda and Eddie Can't tell you more than I told you already And here we are wavin' Brenda and Eddie goodbye. A bottle of red, and bottle of white Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight I'll meet you anytime you want In our Italian Restaurant. |

Minuet, Very nice choice. I think CP should look at this thread, as he seemed a while ago to be very interested in the lyrics of a few bands.

I also noticed something interesting about Billy Joel and why he is considered as one of the best storyteller-singer-songwriter of all times by Rolling Stones and Billboard Magazines. All of his songs tell stories. His song, "We Didn't Start the Fire", gave us a nice summary of major historical events starting in the late forties to present day. Very few people can do that. I am please I had his albums in my CD library along with my other favorite artists including Pat Benetar (Whatever happen to this lovely lady of rock?), Elton John, Rod Stewart and Bob Saiger. Very few modern bands or groups can match Billy Joel's songs. The closest I had heard was from the Wallflowers but that's a different story altogther. |

The thing I like most about Scenes From An Italian Restaurant is how the music follows the mode of an encounter with an old friend over dinner would be. First its slow and soft, as the two sit down shake hands are a little uncomfortable with each other since they had not seen each other in so long. Then it picks up a little, as they get reacquainted the uncomfortable feeling starts to fade away as they trade stories of how life has treated them. Then it explodes as the walls drop and they start to really reminiscing about the past and how much fun they had. and then it gets slow again but this time because they are sad to part ways as they say their good byes. The song has a whole other level then the story the lyrics are telling. |

As I said before for me my most favorite Joel song is “You’re Only Human (Second Wind)” – but I do recognizes that it is not amongst his best work, so I think it falls into the profound category, at lest for me on a personal level. Its a upbeat song about dealing with life and the problems you may encounter along the way.

Scotty, Thanks. And fair enough. So I assume Scenes From An Italian Restaurant has a video to accompany the music? I know I have never seen this, but I haven't seen MTV for several years either. |
