Question for Catholics; Messages at Fatima

Last night I was watching Jack Van Impe on TBS and he was talking about the writings of several Catholics including Bishop Fulton Sheen (how many remember him?) and even Pope John Paul II. He claimed that they had all hinted that one of the messages of Fatima had stated that the Pope following the current Pope would defect from the faith, taking one third of the bishops and cardinals with him. Has anybody ever heard of this prediction. I never have.

Are you referring to the 1917 Portugal Fatima, or something else (seriously)?

1917, Fatima, Portugal. According to Van Impe, Catholic scholars (including Pope Benedict XVI who wrote a bit about it), all agree that at least part of the third secret is that the dogma of Faith will be preserved in Portugal which is taken to mean that the faith will NOT be preserved elsewhere. Apparently, some have hinted it has to do with a defection by the Pope selected following Benedict XVI. I was just wondering if anybody knew anything about this.

Fascinating. I have music-related tidbits similar to this, but I will post those in another thread one day.

That's the thing about the Fatima prophecies. No one really knows what they are except a few over the decades that are apparently high up in the hierarchy. Some have said the visions at Medjugorje in the former Yugoslavia have expanded on these prophecies.

The funny thing about prophecies is that they are rarely understood well and often misinterpreted (or repeatedly reinterpreted). I have heard the prediction of yet another schism in the Church to come along. However, whether this is prophecy or simply and inevitability due to the evolution of faith is anyone's guess. I guess I always figured that it would come with the American Catholic Church eventually breaking off to form its own.

What made Van Impe's program interesting was that he was looking into bible prophecy to see if the Fatima prophecy fit. He felt that the Book of Revelation did support it. But that is a very cryptic book itself, so who knows. One thing is that even though he is healthy, Pope Benedict XVI is an old man and may not be around that long, so it is quite possible that if this prophecy is true, we shall see it unfold in the next couple of decades.

Just one side note about Jack Van Impe..

I come across him really late at night sometimes, and I find myself just unable to change the channel. He and his wife Rexella are an unusual pair, but I find that the two are usually trying to empasize the positive.

That is finding areas of the Bible that connect different people and some other religions.

I am not sure how I feel about the Rapture (they support this concept).

Beyond that I don't know too much about him. Your mentioning him, has prompted me to check out his site though... LINK

Yes, Van Impe has gotten a lot of flack because he always has good things to say about people of all religions including the Muslims. I don't know about the rapture either; kind of makes you hope that if it happens and you are in an airplane, please God don't let the pilot be a Christian! Anyway, I do like Jack and Rexella.
