Scientiology (that particular path) seems to work for Tom Cruise. He appears to be a very happy and successful person.

In addition, he is no stranger to helping people.

Like most every "star" he lives in la-la land and is insulated from the reality of the world.

Franko,

Spot on. I believe full well that it is a cult, and cults are dangerous and self-serving. I frequently do judge their tenets, especially when close aquaintances of mine start believing in much of the erroneous teachings.

If you say so.

The "religion" is full of pseudoscientific mumbo-jumbo and is a fad that will disappear eventually.

Somerled,

Although I want to agree with you here with regard to Scientology, don't you believe this about every religion?

I think that the teachings of Scientology are indeed a twisted form of Pop-psychology with a little UFO malarkey thrown into the mix since once you are 'clear' you are told secrets about how the teachings were given to Hubbard by aliens---at least that is what I heard by somebody who was fairly high up in the organization and left it. But its real appeal isn't in its philosophy or metaphysics. It is what the organization does, in the short-term, for people who are floundering, who feel empty and alone and unsure of what life is all about. To these, it brings a family, a family that works to assure them that they are lovable and loved, and that with "the family's" guidance and help, they have hope of throwing off their limitations and becoming free from psychoemotional barriers. This is the appeal of all cults, and Scientology has the same problem of all cults which is difficulty maintaining that initial rush in its converts; and this difficulty (I believe) is due their flawed metaphysical principles, postulates, and assumptions which are wholly inadequate in supporting long-term change.

I found this site that is very critical about the Church of Scientology.

Operation Clambake

The guy who runs the site seems very didicated to exposing the underbelly of Scientology.

If just some of what is on this site is true, then the Church of Scientology is one scary cult.

Too bad Cruise got mixed up in all of this mess. He is supposedly about to become engaged to Katie Holmes (a young actress). It is rumored that she has agreed to convert to Scientology from Catholicism. I hope she really looks into this "Church" before taking that step.

Psyfi,

Excellent post. Your background equips you to discuss the elements of cults very intelligently. Have you ever been involved or aided in deprogramming?

No such involvement. However, in my search for God I met many other people who were also searching. I cannot tell you the number of times I met people who eventually got involved in cults of some sort and I began to see a pattern.

What you write about them is spot on, at least based on what I have read about them for the past twenty-five or so years. I have checklists (about twenty or so items) that almost every cult adheres to in one form or another. I really do hope that Katie Holmes knows what she is getting into here. Perhaps 38957 or Swidden (as practicing Roman Catholics) should sit her down and 'splain it to her. ;)

I don't feel called to be an evangelist. I figure I would just drive people away. I just try not to get caught being too much of a hypocrit.

Fair enough. And thank you, BTW, for heeding my orders. You will have two servings of pie tonight.
