Tom Cruise is in the news now about his upcoming film and current relationship. He has been part of Scientology for some time. Does anyone know what Scientology is about or know of good links that explain it? |

Who, I have studied Scientology (L. Ron Hubbard) for several years. I am not part of this belief system. You might try the Apologetics Index, using key terms like scientology, Eddy, etc. (This may be done using the A-Z Index at the left.) Here is the link: http://www.apologeticsindex.org/ Here is an annotation for the site: An exhaustive resource on apologetics research and world religions, this site includes numerous resources on religions, cults, sects, movements, and doctrines. Listings are organized (and may be searched) alphabetically. Relevant news headlines from around the world are furnished daily. The site includes a combination search box at the bottom right of the screen. Users enter the search term, and combine this with various formats (e.g., book, video, music recording) to obtain desired combinatorial results. I can provide other links for you if you wish. N.B.: Good thing I checked my facts. I had the founders mixed up--sorry about that. |

Who, Here is an 'Extended link' from the site I mentioned above: http://www.apologeticsindex.org/s04.html The site is one that I use for cult evangelism. You will find that it is biased. I can provide more non-sectarian sites/links if you wish. Let me know. |

I know the group has had trouble with being able to maintain a tax exempt status! Frankly, I think it is a result of the late Mr. Hubbard believing his own science fiction writings a little too much. However, if you have never read his "Mission: Earth" 10 book series, it can be very funny. Apparently, according to it, the greatest minds in the history Earth (a place that does not really exist) are Sigmund Freud and Bugs Bunny. |

Eddy? Do you mean Mary Baker Eddy? She started "Christian Science" I think. As far as I know she wasn't involved in Scientology. |

L. Ron Hubbard is one of the few authors I know of who continues to publish after having been dead for several years. He's not going away any time soon.

He is also in the news because, citing Scientology, he slammed Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants for postpartum depression. As one woman said, "When he has a baby and experiences postpartum depression first hand, that will be when I listen to his opinion on this matter." |

Psyfi, Yes, I corrected the beginning of the post, but not the internal material. Thanks. Re: Cruise-- He has nothing to say to me politically that matters. This is the same guy who advocated saving all of the whales, bears, owls, etc.--and then proceeded to almost run over hundreds of living creatures in Top Gun. But I do fear for Katie Holmes now....

Scientiology (that particular path) seems to work for Tom Cruise. He appears to be a very happy and successful person. In addition, he is no stranger to helping people. |

Swidden, True enough. I would hope that those whom follow those teachings would examine them very closely and scrutinize the tenets very carefully. |

I'm a little wary of a cult that claims to be able to hook up an electronic device to you to determine whether or not you're "cleared" or "enlightened". There's an interesting book by Hubbard's son written a few years ago that talks about some of the darker aspects of "daddy". I read Dianetics a few years ago; it sounded like pop-hypnosis psycho-analysis to me. I'd be intrigued to hear what SciFi thinks about it. If you're seeking to understand "subconcious" forces that may be "holding you back", I much preferred "Gestalt Therapy" by Fritz Perls et al. Without judging Tom Cruise, who may be just casually practising some of the self-hypnosis aspects of Dianetics (the Bible of Scientology) the cult does have a disturbing aspect to it, in the way that it encourages aggression towards you're fellow man. Hubbard was a consumate "misanthrope" (hates humanity) and a fluent user of profanity (now that sounds "enlightened"). Add to the fact that Scientology practices a certain degree of deception on it's intitiates, wants money up front, and refuses to divulge it's entire practices to "casual enquiry" I find disturbing. If you're looking for enlightenment, I suggest "Sermon On The Mount" as originally presented by an enlightened Jewish carpenter some time ago..... |

Scientologists are fruit-loops. The "religion" is full of pseudoscientific mumbo-jumbo and is a fad that will disappear eventually. |
