But during that time they made more money than ever. It is well known that the mobs would harrass businesses into cooperating or risk execution. Public officials were also similarly bribed or blackmailed or assasinated.

I don't think it's very convincing for someone to look back on history when such terrible things happened and say "it wasn't so bad" such as slavery. How would you know?

This stuff happens today and with lots of stuff besides booze. It is not a good arguement to say that we should legalized something in order to reduce crime, by redefining crime. If something is illegal, we should enforce it.

If by and large we reduced the destruction in society by outlawing distilled alcohol, would you be for it? Drastically reduced drunk driving casualties, divorces, deaths by alcohol related illnesses, etc., but saw some increase in organized crime.

I would have to say no. Although I don't personally imbibe hard liquor, I think to make it illegal would be dangerous by creating a huge new revenue for organized crime, not to mention the possibility of people poisoning themselves with their "home brew". Like you said, we should enforce the existing laws and find ways of reducing crime perhaps by setting up breathalizers at bars for customers going home.

What about the argument, I don't want the government telling me I can't have a drink if I want one?
