It was ruled that Poker is a game and not gambling.

This sounds vaguely familiar. Do you inhale when you play poker? ;)

Not when bluffing.

California has lots of casinos. Fortunately, there are stipulations that keep them to relatively remote areas. Most are run by local Native American tribes and the money goes to improve thier lives as well as pay taxes.

That would seem to be an excellent usage of the funds.

I think so. And surprisingly so does the Governator.

It was actually a really big contraversy and still is because Native Americans basically have a monopoly on casinos in the Bay Area. You have to drive a couple hours from the city to get to a casino in the countryside on native land which I would prefer to having big Vegas style casinos in the cities.

Big casinos are fighting this year after year though and are constantly defeated on the ballots.

One of the best usages of taxes is for better roads, IMO. Also, for giving heat to those that do not have it during the winter months. :)

Agreed, but the winters in California are not as harsh as Michigan. ;)

Have you considered that this is basically 'taxing' those who are least able to afford it? This is my objection to gambling.

Yes, you can find lots of people who gamble responsibly, if that makes sense, but gambling does present a problem for society the same way that drugs and prostitution does. There are those who will allow their families to be destroyed because of this weakness in their character when the gambling gets out of hand. This has happened in my family before. I don't like the negative effects in society that gambling has. Yes, casinos pay taxes, but this is because they remove money from people's wallets quite efficiently, and like the lottery, this mostly effects the lower section of the wage earners.

I am not opposed to people having the freedom to ruin their life at will, but when this is done en masse and there is no real benefit to society from it other than rich casino owners and some tax revenue that doesn't offset the negatives, I can't justify it.

I am afraid that I lump casino gambling and brothels in the same category here.

Well, it's up to the individual to seek help if he/she has a problem. You could make the same argument for taxing alcohol as well.

I did hear Frist say a day or two ago that the next budget would be smaller than the last in terms of deficit.

If this is true, would this not be a step in the right direction?

I suppose. But we don't need a step, we need to stop the bleeding. Let's go down the list of things that we want the government to spend money on, prioritize them, begin funding them and then when money runs out, quit funding. That is pretty simple. I do it once a month.

The only cuts you can make that will have any sort of impact are in defense and entitlements. Defense seems like an unlikely target at this point so the cuts will have to be in the realm of entitlements, or taxes can be raised or both.

Gvok,

I frequently see your usage of impact in some of your posts. Do you have a specific dollar amount in mind?
