Well this is what scares me. We are already playing God in many ways and the ease with which so many wish to ignore ethical and moral concerns regarding stem cell research makes me wonder about where we are heading. I have seen many a science fiction movie in my time and the one that strikes me as most likely to best describe our future is GATTACA. |

^^^ Yes, when humans makes themselves out to be their own gods, there is IMO definitely cause for concern. |

People can be both scientific and religious if they accept that science deals with a limited aspect of reality. I used to have a famous quote from Einstein about his profound belief in the mystical. |

There is no question that life on the planet is changing. I suspect the biggest change will be demographic with the huge numbers of Chinese and Muslims. Any genetic engineering would be dwarfed by the numbers. I think the episodes on Star Trek do point out potential problems but I think if it could make humans better such as eliminating a disease without any negative effects then great. Of course, humans may be replaced by AI as the next step on the evolutionary ladder. |

Just to add to this, the problem I see is when people make science their god and expect that the beliefs and methods of science apply to everything. Science has a self-defined very limited scope. It does not even attempt to explain our human experience including perception, thought, emotion, or even awareness itself. To my understanding, all of its models of the nature of reality have flaws. I think it best to accept it as a useful tool but not worship it. |

Psychology is a science and attempts to address the human condition. In particular there is a whole field of psychology which addresses human perception. Personally, I have found it to be a poor substitute for religion though. |

As a psychologist and a religious person, I gotta agree with that! I once saw a testimony of a miracle on a religious show. It was about a young man who had a life-threatening disease, very serious, weeks to live. But he was very religious as was his family and so they began a prayer vigil the likes of which you don't often see. Not only was at least one family member praying round the clock (24-7 in rotation with no let up), he also called all of the people he had ever know that he had unforgiveness toward and asked them to forgive him for holding a grudge. The family put up healing scriptures all over the room so that every place he turned his eyes, he could see God's Promises for healing. They did many more things as well. The family was "the poster child" for how to have a miracle. Anyway, he had his miracle BUT he said that the most difficult aspect of the entire situation wasn't facing death, it was dealing with the psychologists who kept coming into the room and telling him to stop praying, get realistic, and face the fact that he was going to die. Psychologists haven't a clue as to the power of human perception when it is bound and determined to connect with God. |
