I use Cool Edit Pro. GREAT program. It has every effect you could want, and it does the mixdown for you. You also have unlimited tracks. Dark Places was about 25 tracks.

Twenty-five? Wow. Did you know that Pepper (1967) was made with a four-track machine?

Nice acoustic piece.  I like the vocal harmonies.  Had the temptation around the three minute mark though to come in with my  "cosmic strings"  setting on my synth.

Yeah, the guitar tuning is a little off.  Did you  detune the guitar down a bit for this recording ?  (a trick I used to do with acoustics)

    A  FAN      :meditate:

No, the neck got warped, and I didnt notice it until I listened to it there.

I'm going to record it again. Would you like to add a synth peice to it? I can send you my recording program, and a session disk.

My daughter and I listened to it last night. She really liked it but also noticed the guitar was out of tune.

Great ear for an 11 year old. She is currently working on a piece of music using a program called Garage Band that her Aunt/music teacher has. (For Mac I think - we don't have a Mac at home but if she keeps this up we will have to get one). She has come up with words for a chorus, but not for any verses. She has never written vocals before so I don't know how good she will be at it. Anyhow - when her piece is finished I think I will get my husband to put it up on the site you are using so that we can share with others and see what they think. Chelsea loved the idea when I suggested it so hopefully that will motivate her to finish the song sooner.

Fes...Sgt Pepper was done on 4 tracks? :jawdrop:

Min, if your daughter can tell that a guitar is out of tune, then she is talented, and should be encouraged to persue music. Some adults cant even tell that.

Minuet,

I love hearing about your daughter's musical interests. :)

8247,

It was, kind of. ;) I believe they used four 4-track machines to overlay approximately sixteen tracks on some takes.

Actually, they did use a four-track machine with a huge Revox tape mechanism. They then mixed it down into two-track stereo and then added two more tracks, and so on. Back in the eightees I tried this technique, and believe me, things can get hairy...

Still, quite a feet of engineering and production.

I shudder to think of what might have happened without Martin's ingenuity....

He certainly was very influential. But he (George M.) is also quick to point out that the boys themselves chose keys and instruments, and even suggested the various orchestrations that they used. I recall hearing on a documentary (The Compleat Beatles) that it was they who influenced him to do things in their music, and not the other way around. Of course, I believe that there had to be some give-and-take as well.

That's the great thing about the Beatles. They were very smart guys who didn't have to be told what to do. P.M. and J. L. caught on very quickly to production techniques back in the early going. But still, even the brightest artists need a smart producer.

I once had the opportunity to talk to Andrew Oldham briefly; he sort of summed it up as: some artists need to be guided, manipulated, tutored, and told what to do a lot of the time outside of the song-writing process; and other artists don't need any such management - just good technical assistance and a producer that understands their style and sound.

A lot of good bands out of the sixties and seventies didn't need brilliant producers; just competent ones. Nowadays, pop superstars practically need their hand held at every step of the production process. One exception being Madonna, whether you like her music or not - she's not a bad producer herself. Unfortunately Britney and Jessica et al need help finding the studio's soft drink machine.

Franko,

Again, nicely written. Another thing I love about the Fab Four is that they didn't need the visual to 'sell' their sound. All they needed was them playing their instruments, and crafting their uniquely blended style with many hours of hard practice. Although they obviously knew how to record in the studio, it is important to remember that they were excellent performers as well. That being said, it is somewhat ironic that they would eventually distribute the very first rock music video. ;)
