Lord of the flies...; a book that I am reminded off

I read this book a while ago. It was part of a class I took in high school. Now four years later I remember just what turned boys in to wild creatures.

My reminder, a death of a rabit. My room mate seemed to want to give me the blame. Although I was not the one that chased it around the yard. I thought it best to leave the animal to itself.

My room mates excuse was that it had been abandoned by its mother. This too was a reminder of the story. The rabbit, he meant to bring into his home, where he could nurse it back to health.

The rabbit ran, like it was healthy. Yet he caught it. It happend so fast that I told him not to touch it or his scent would be on it.

He used a towel. The rabbit was tamed the second the towel hit the rabbit. It did not move. It was then I saw that the rabbit had no fur on its tail, and the tail was significantly longer then the usual tail.

Strange, I did not think it was a rabbit, but still I thought it would be best not to touch it or take it in. It was a wild creature. It needed to be free.

He insisted, I said no. finally, he gave up, and the rabbit died. Now he blames me for telling him not to. I don't feel I should accept the blame. But already he has gone through lengths to prove me wrong.

Anyways... I think the tale reminds me of Lord of the flies. The way he chased after the rabbit was so very the essence of a wild man. I thought it was like he was catching food for his dinner.

So far he wants me to work on a dairy farm... somewhere with animals. I would rather not dairy cows aren't exactly something that reflects what has happened. If I had my choice I'd join a commune, where we'd grow vegitables, corn, beans, rice, what ever.

The reason why he wants me to be on a diary farm... he claims he came from a farm where animals where always present.

In my eyes... it was the rabbits call of the wild that when broken by the chase died from confusion. Just like a kyote the rabbit was chased, unlike a kyote the rabbit died with out being eaten. I think it was the confusion that lead the rabbit to remain very scared in a corner well its mother never got near it.

The rabbit wasn't a usuall brown, it wasn't common. Unless the younger stages of the rabbit have dark patches on it. Still I don't think I've seen another like it. But I didn't get a good view since I was trying to keep my distance.

What a waste of a life. I can't bear the blame. Thats why I write this. every time my room mate does something, he has to be on the right.

When I said I had a dream where I once wanted to trade my soul for the world to go to heaven, he said he had always ready to make that sacrifice.

It worries me, right now all I can think of is his own attitude that appears to make me think he is trying to make himself look better. I know that such a sacrifice is not worthy of God's holiness, and such an attempt is not to be played out by man. I don't desire to see any man or women go to hell. That is why I realize how painful is to realize your in fear becuase you wonder if you had traded it. I don't believe its acceptable. God could never let his children part with the one thing that made them who they were.

I fear that he needs to realize he is not God, and should turn his attention to the idea that mankind is good, not great*. Greatness is not of man, and never will be. We can only aspire to be great*. Anything more would just be a false pretense and an imagination that would serve only ones own inner desire to be something heavenly or Godly or God themself.

That you are saddened by this event I understand.

However, it's not likely that the animal died from its confusion. or fear. If it was a young animal as you suspect it's unlikely that the exertion of the chase caused its death. No, most likely there was already a health problem with the animal and neither you nor your roommate would likely have changed the outcome. Nature took its course.

It seems that both you and your roommate had the best intentions at heart, you just saw the problem from opposite perspectives. Now where you feel sadness, your friend probably feels as though he failed in a humanitarian cause.

Hope you feel better...

I have to agree with Swidden. I think 'intention' is the key here. In "Lord of the Flies" these boys gave into the darkest of human impulses and intents. Your roommate wasn't doing that. He wanted to help the creature. You did too. Then, in all likelihood, because it had been ill and injured and weary for a long time, it died and this upset the both of you. But there was no blame in what happened---just a difference of opinion about what was best for the 'rabbit' (if it was a rabbit); and probably both of your were wrong. It was probably near death when you spotted it.

It sounds like your friend is a little bit caught up in his "self-righteousness".

You will encounter this from time to time. Nor is this trait only found among religious people; I've found that all kinds sometimes get into this "competition" as to who can be the "most sensitive", or "moral", or "holy" etc.

Don't allow yourself to be intimidated by this attitude. Next time he brings up the rabbit incident tell him that it would have actually made a good stew.

Sometimes a little sarcasm is required.

Peace.
