C. S. Lewis--he is a gem, for sure. I would defy any atheist to read some of his works and not come away from that experience either an agnostic or a believer.

What stood out for me in "The Great Divorce" was that even if you didn't believe in God at all, he surely showed how people kept themselves in a hellish state of mind by the way they thought of themselves and others.

Either that, or when he shuffles off this mortal coil, his loved ones had better dress him for very warm weather... Posted Image :D

I like it hot.

Fine, but I imagine asbestos will chafe. Truly a horrid punishment for eternity if you're wrong and there is an afterlife... ;) :D

but often people do bad things out of ignorance and will end up paying for them later.

what if people do "bad things" for the greater good? or because they have no alternative? do they still pay for it in the next life?

My understanding of reincarnation is not that you come back and pay for your 'bad' actions but rather it is the intention of the heart and the focus of the mind that counts. For example, if the intention of Bush's heart is to protect America and Americans and that is his truest focus, he will have no karma associated with his choices, be they right or wrong. Of course I think he made the right choices regarding terrorism but that doesn't matter, it is the motives and intentions that count. If one accidentally shoots a stranger while cleaning a gun, he isn't going to be shot in the next life because the intent was not to harm.

That's not how it works. Just because you think you're doing good while doing bad does not keep you from your fate. I am sure Hitler thought he was doing the world a service by ridding the Earth of Jews, but I am sure his karma has caught up with him regardless of what he thinks of himself.

We have a different understanding of karma. I believe that it does work according to our motives. Now, if somebody is in denial because they don't want to see certain things like their own levels of hatred and such, then they will come back to a life where the folly of denial is made salient to them. It is not as simple as if Mary slaps Sally then in the next life Sally will have a chance to slap Mary. Karma isn't punishment; it's therapy. If somebody hates gay people and treats them mean and such, they might come back as a gay person but not to punish them for the wrongs inflicted. Rather, to provide them with the therapeutic opportunity to learn that, when all is said and done, gay people are just people that hurt and have hopes and dreams and aspirations as all others. And, really, the best way to learn is through positive not negative reinforcement; so there is a great chance that the person who inflicted harm on some gay people will come back to a very positive environment that supports them as a gay person and cherishes them and so forth.

Hell is eternal torment. A gigantic burocracy will endless windows and lines. You are at the wrong window go to window 120B. I can't help you , you need form 1342/A. Go to the second floor window 244C. I can't give you form 1342/A unless your form 1456/C has the correct stamp, go to Building 4 third floor window 567.

Or maybe I souldn't post after going to the DMV

What makes you think I would require asbestos insulation. There are better materials available.

Anyway - like I said - I like it HOT. The hotter the better.

I have worked in close vacinity to very large gas fired furnaces , and inside them. As a steel industry engineer. Your description of hell doesn't phase or scare me one iota.

The heart is nothing but a pump, it can have no intentions one way or another.
