What was Picard's greatest accomplishment?

I think it was stopping the civil war in the Klingon Empire in Redemption. Otherwise with the Klingon Empire in chaos, it could've spilled over elsewhere, and they would'nt have been strong enough to help fight the Dominion War later.

It may be that his reshaping of Wesley's life--and his career path--was one of his greatest accomplishments.

Okay. But I liked the Traveler. :)

Speaking of careers, perhaps Picard's entrance into the 'Career Day' contest by Riker is right up there as well.

So did I.

Picards greatest accomplishment was probably being assimilated by the borg and then living to tell about it. He might have been forced to kill thousands of lives, but the knowledge he gained from it helped the federation out big time. Also, it ended up giving us the "With the first link the chain is forged" monolauge.

Likely his greatest act of heroism to save the Federation and likely the Alpha Quadrant from Borg domination.

On another level, I always thought that the respect that Picard earned with his involvement in Klingon affairs and his diplomacy with other species was an ongoing part of his "greatness".

I was going to put another example, his greatest achievement as a person, but I couldn't think of one!

Nice choice. I cried the first time I saw the end of Preemptive Strike. After Riker leaves, and there is no dialogue (just circular camera work), I was numb for Capt. Picard.

Thanks but I was refering to a niner book. Premptive Strike didn't emotional charge me...I was mostly bored. I think from the 7th season the only emotional ones to me were Descent and Lower Decks.
