As far a sueing.......standard laws apply......
1. If you give me credit for creating it
2. If you are not trying to gain profit from it
3. if you are not taking profit away from me

Defiant,

A great (and complicated) question. I'm not an expert on copyright, although I have two friends that are. I refer those types of questions to them frequently.

Truthfully? No. Songs do not have to be sung. Composers wrote music for instruments and called them songs. Also, there are the songs of rap music (indefinite pitch and sprechstimme are often heard in place of actual musical notes--i.e., those with definite pitch).

FES, I am correct in saying that a song must have lyrics....otherwise it's music, noise, or nothing?

I didn't now that composers called them songs. But am I correct in saying that Bolero is not a song?

It is true that most songs do have text. But, songs can be instrumental. (For example, see Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words). And many works without words are described as having a 'song-like' quality to them, although strictly speaking, this does not make them songs. The art song (Schubert, Wolf, et al.) has a particular formal structure as well.

Correct. Bolero is often referred to as a 'torch song,' but it is really an orchestral work. As a genre, it would be closer to a 'ballet for orchestra' (as described in text books and among musicologists).

that I was asking you not telling you (I am =am I). I felt I had to point that out, it may have the wrong tone to it.

EDIT: And doesn't music have formal structure (that's what distinguishes it from noise)?
