This is what I am doing now. I have also been asked by a friend of mine (he does not post on this Board) to blog all of my comments on his Web page for every one of the episodes I watch. I have said yes to this, tentatively. |

I always thought it was ironic that in the first season they made a blind man the helmsman... The thing I didn't like about McCoy's appearance was that he went unnamed. Clearly he was the character we know and love, but it seemed unkind to me that the did not "properly" credit him... |

I think that was just one for the TOS fans. If you had credited McCoy, then questions from the new TNG fans would have been raised. |

Swidden, You know, I never thought about that before. Never. Astute observation.
Correct. As a side note, he was the very first named person at the conclusion of the episode (I saw this a couple of days ago and noticed his "Special Guest" status in big blue letters--that was nice.) |

For the time it was produced and the purpose it sought, I was well pleased and excited about 'Encounter at Farpoint' when it first came out. I was not much of a Star Trek fan in 1988 (or was it '89?). All I remember is my mom taking up valuable tube-time with stupid old re-runs of Shatner and crew in some cheesy cardboard spaceship (don't jump down my throat, I've been converted since then...!
). TNG hooked me!Then, after a couple of seasons, when I watched re-runs of 'EaF', or viewed my home tape of it, I didn't really like it. Stiff acting for the most part, concepts introduced but not fully developed or forgotten since that pilot, the ridiculous skirt uniforms, parts that dragged, and the understanding that more could have been done... However, once the series completed its run, I came to re-appreciate the pilot, more than even when I first saw it. It did a wonderful job of introducing the important characters and even in setting up the over-arching story arc of the Enterprise's "continuing mission..."

HistoryDude, I think watching it in retrospect does have its advantages. I know that I appreciated it a lot more after repeated viewings, much more so than I did back in 1987 when it premiered. |

Just bought the first season of TNG. Really weird to look back and see how the 24th Century got started after everything that happened since. Encounter at Farpoint isn't the most compelling Trek tale, but it is interesting to see how everything began. The characters are introduced well, although, the introductions seem a bit lengthy, as this episode seems to be bent on introducing the characters and the 24th century more than actually telling a story. There is significant material in this one which sets the stage for the perception of the 24th Century utopia far beyond the trappings of the all too human 20th century. Notably, Picard's insistance that the "nonsense" of the Cold War is centuries behind mankind. |

I think it was a good start. We have seen a lot of villians in the Star Trek universe, but none so "lovable" as "Q"! Bill
