I see. We are going through all of Trek systematically. Besides, I will be with my wife and children. I can't think of any place I'd rather be, truth be told. :)

Thanks. I usually get something new out of repeated viewings of any Trek episode or film.

She is an awesome actress. There are none better. She should have seventeen Oscars at this point in her career. She is cheesy at times, but her cheese is not as cheesy as some of the other cheesier, cheesy actors.

Encounter At Farpoint - June 1, 2005

I watched Encounter At Farpoint last night. There are many things I thought I would mention about the first episode of TNG. These are just some random thoughts that I gleaned from having watched it. I recall back in 1987 greatly anticipating this episode.

It was really nice seeing the characters before they were polished. Data is very stiff in places, as are Dr. Crusher and Worf. Interestingly (to me, anyway), I thought Riker, Geordi, Yar, and Wesley were quite similar to how they were in later seasons of TNG. I don't know if this is a good thing or not, since character development is often key with some viewers.

Over the years, and of course in retrospect, my admiration for DeLancie as 'Q' has appreciated. He shows quite a range in this role when all of his appearances (from all of the series) are taken into consideration. I loved the line, "Lucky guess," when Picard figures out what really occurred on Farpoint Station.

When I first saw Grappler Zorn, I thought that I must have seen him in other Trek roles. His voice sounded quite familiar, and this is all I really have to go on, since they can pretty much do whatever they wish with make-up.

Two times the Ferengi are mentioned in this episode. (I love using this as a trivia question, because most times I ask the question people will guess that the first mention of them by name occurs in later episodes of Season One when we actually *see* the Ferengi.) It is interesting that the responses (from Picard and company) to their having been mentioned in no way contradicts what occurs in Acquisition (ENT). One time, nothing is said, while the other time, a peripheral comment is made. It is Zorn who knows about the Ferengi, and not the crew of the Enterprise.

What a fabulous treat it was having Bones appear in this episode. I don't know if it was Gene's idea, or if D. C. Fontana (co-writer) came up with it. In any event, it was poignant, and it worked very well. They made him look so frail--which given his age in the episode, was both realistic and a very nice touch.

All in all, not a bad story. This series had IMO the toughest battle, having to follow the sacred ground paved by TOS. I recall watching this episode back in 1987, and thinking that it definitely had possibilities. I also remember being surprised by the saucer separation, the character of Data, and seeing a Klingon on the Bridge. And in retrospect, not seeing Geordi in Engineering (yet) is quite odd.

BTW, as most know, O'Brien doesn't get a first name for several years on Trek. However I am now thinking that he may not have gotten a last name either for quite some time--LOL. His name in the first episode? "Com."

Notable lines:

"I don't see no points on your ears, boy, but you sound like a Vulcan!" (McCoy). One word: Fascinating.
"Almost as bad." (McCoy to Data). This was almost a tear-jerker. The line is in reference to Bones making a comparison between Vulcans and Data, an android. The final lines uttered by Bones pertaining to the ship having the right name (i.e., Enterprise), and assuring Data that she will always get you to your destination, was superb.
"Lucky guess." (Q). This is delivered brilliantly by DeLancie. You can see he's somewhat miffed, and perhaps even a bit perturbed. This will be one of many 'skirmishes' that Picard will win against Q throughout the series.

I actually liked it, although the story isn't all that strong. Call me nostalgic, but it's interesting to see how Roddenberry changed his vision and yet allowed it to remain the same in many ways.

It's was okay. I didn't like the uniforms. I didn't really couldn't get into the characters. It was cool to see the ship separate into two sections and the storyline was pretty good. I was just missing TOS crew. I really didn't give it decent chance.
