As we've had the 60th anniversary of the the liberation of the camp recently, there has been a few rather gripping docos on TV about it lately.

One was the 'Final Sloution' part of the 'World at War' series which was made in the 70s, and another was a really interesting one about the Allies grappling with the decision of whether to bomb the camp or not.

We've had other horrible instances of genocide over the years, Rwanda, Cambodia , Yugoslavia and while they are horrible and in part difficult to comprehend , its a little easier to reason out what happened in those places more so that the German extermination camps. In the other places you could roughly say it was from two sides running around the country side killing each other, not as organisewd as the Germans were about it.

But with Auschwitz and the other camps it is very hard to comprehend, such clinical and organised killing, how could the SS troops stomach it day in and day out, even if they had a great hatred for the Jews and other minorities wouldnt some part of their conscience kick in?, especially when it came to the pregnant women and children. By seeing such mass numbers being de-humanised, wouldnt they think , well some might retaliate against us later and do the same to us. How did they think they would get away with it?

Lots of people would have known about it, the smell around the local towns, all those involved.

The drive to make the Arian race supreme was also so inexplicably arrogant, German males having to get the government to give the ok for whom they would marry ?!?!?!?

Also interesting was the doco on the Allies trying to decide whether to bomb the camp or not, back in those days, a precision bombing raid so far in to enemy territory was difficult, what I got from this doco was that I think the Allies were scared of what would happen if they bombed the camp and a lot of the prisoners were killed , and how that might be viewed late on . They could have bombed the trrain lines going in, but it was explained in this doco that the german could repair them within a day.
One thing I asked myself is why didnt they drop some propaganda leaflets over german ares, they had pictures of the goings on that had been smuggled out. Why not drop some leaflets with pictures and an explaination of what was going on to the general german public.

I think If I ever go to europe, I should like to go the Auschwitz and the museum, it is after all the scariest place on this earth

Thanks, CP!

I saw what was left of Dachau a few decades ago. Sent a shiver up your spine.

I am not sure I could ever go to Auschwitz. I know I should and I personally know many people who have visited there. But I am not sure I have the guts to see it.

I have trouble with the idea of even visiting Germany. My mother was born there - but there is absolutely nothing of my history there now. No relatives. Nothing. That part of my family history is gone. Most people want to visit thier heritage. I don't. My mother has no desire to return either.

I posted this link on the Tangent thread the other day, but PBS is running a program on Auschwitz. The last installment will be aired next week. The site provides online transcripts for the episodes (which includes commentary from survivors and guards).

My niece went to Auschwitz about six months ago. She said it was the most horrible place in the world. I told her that is what happens when racism goes unchecked. I have no desire to go and see to any concentration camp. I watched Schindler's List and cried through the whole movie. They must stand so the future generation will not forget how ugly man can get.
