U.N. Asks if World Has the Will; to Stop Genocide

Sadly, the evidence seems to indicate that the world doesn't have the will to stop genocide.

Even more sad, an institution like the UN (which has the audacity to even ask the question) almost ensures that the "world" won't intervene in situations where there is evidence of genocide.

I haven't answered the poll because I cannot say if the world has the will. If I was asked if the UN had the will the answer would sadly be no.

As for what constitues genocide - the real question here is does it matter? You want to stop the genocide BEFORE it happens. That means recognizing the signs of tribal/race conflicts. If you wait to declare it a genocide then you are too late. That is what the UN is doing wrong in the Sudan.

So what does the world do to prevent these conflicts that lead to genocide? We can't get them all liquored up and take pictures of them dressed as farm animals for embarrassment...

genocide is a matter of intent, not quantities of deaths. If the intent was to wipe out a race, religion or ethnicity even if your plans never came to full fruition, that is genocide.

If in the course of a war, you killed one-hundred thousand say, Japanese, this is not genocide as the intent was to win the war.

That sounds right:

genocide : The systematic and planned extermination of an entire national, racial, political, or ethnic group.
