LOL! BTW, it's nice to see the apologists for Pharktar on this Board today. It says a lot about the character of those that post on this Board. :)

Seems to me if you want to see a better fiscal situation always vote for different people. So how about you elect a Republican house, Democrat Senate and Ralf Nader as President LOL.

If our elected representatives spent more time representing their constituancy than trying to raise campaign contributions by doing favors for lobbyists we wouldn't have these kinds of problems. But some Supreme Court activist judge decided to make bribing politicians the equal of free speech. :frust:

Okay, let's get the deficit under control.

What do you want to cut? Forget the tax increase. THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN, and besides tax cuts stimulate spending. Spending generates taxes, both for states and the federal government, and creates jobs, which generates taxes, and so on...

Let's see what we have:

We can not cut the military. Period. First, we are at war. Second, our biggest blunder was allowing the military to be cut during the 1990s (both the Bush 41 and Clinton administrations). While the Soyuz Sovietskiiy went away, the threats did not. That was a collossal error.

We have this new Department of Homeland Security, like it or not (bureaucratic boondoggle that it is), so it has to stay, in part or in kind.

So, what does that leave. Everything else. Where do you start?

(Side note: Does anyone here know about something called Zero-Based Budgeting?)

Maybe we can stop using taxes to subsidize private industries.

Yes. And in a fantasy world ZBB would work just fine (even on a small scale in the real world). In the real world, organizations often need to use the prior year’s allocation of funding to work from (one reason is for time management).

However, more accountability in the budgeting process is definitely needed in all levels of government. Perhaps if the federal gov. developed their own quasi- incremental/ZBB model of budgeting.

Wow, you have an anti-capitalist blog for everything! I browsed it, and Rachel is on crack.

You do realize that most "subsidies" are in the form of reduced taxes, not outright grants of cash, right? In addition, what about all those universities who suck up government largesse to the tune of tens of billions per year?

I'm fully aware of that. My idea of ZBB is a radical one, and it would shut down government for months. Maybe that is a good thing...

I agree heartily that there needs to be accountability in how the government manages its budgets. If you knew how some military organizations spent parts of their budgets, your hair would stand on end.
