I love season two, and this was one of the best episodes of that year. Scared the sh*t out of me when I was younger -- especially the scene where the fake Troi tries to convince Picard not to self-destruct the ship. Great stuff.

Drex, The opposite may be seen in Unnatural Selection, however. She was not only caring, but quite compassionate in her attempt to right the wrongs done by others. Don't you just love that scene with the USS Lantry? BTW, I agree with you regarding the second season of TNG. |

^^^ Nah, I'm a massive Pulaski fan. Those first two years of TNG were the show's best, IMO. That "caring and unfeeling" comment was in response to the common complaint about Pulaski -- that she's cold and has no bedside manner.
Unnatural Selection, The Icarus Factor, and the much-underrated Shades of Gray were her best episodes. (Since I'm probably the only one who hasn't said this yet: welcome back, Fes. :)) |

Drex, Thanks. I didn't know that you were an avid Pulaski fan. How did I miss this, I wonder? Maybe it was a side effect of those CP fanboy pills I've been taking in order to counter my addiction to SisterTrek. Wow--another fan of the first season of TNG *and* Shades of Gray? It's nice to know that there are at least two such fans in existence. BTW, have you ever thought of how Diana Muldaur felt after being thrilled to work for Gene during season two, and then not being 'renewed,' so to speak, for the third season? I didn't like that at all. I'm quite grateful for her willingness to step in when it was needed.

Y'know, I seem to remember having discussed this with you and Gdog before.
Yup, that sounds familiar too. Perhaps those Fanboy Pills can cause amnesia as a side-effect.
As I understand it, it was laregly due to how much more popular Gates McFadden's character was. Pulaski was badly received by the public, which is a great shame; as Muldaur played a much more realistic and emotional doctor, and was a far better actor IMO. |

Yep, you did. As I surmised, a side effect. I do think we discussed the quality of season two as well as Shades of Gray before, but not in tandem. Was this the season (Pulaski's run) that Gates was pregnant? |

Gates was pregnant during season five (or maybe it was four . . . have to check that out), but it was very cleverly hidden with camera shots. I don't know about season two, though. On a related note, this is Gates' explanation for leaving in season two, taken from an interview with her in the European Star Trek Magazine: "Well, you know, my reaction was "be careful what you wish for" [when I started] because I was doing theater and I thought I didn't want to do TV; and I'd really resisted. I'd turned it down twice, and they came back again. And so I was doing it, but I was on the fence. So, in a way, when I left I kind of got what I wanted. "By the time I just started to relax and really enjoy it, they didn't want me any more. *laughs* "But then, when they asked me back, that felt awfully nice and I think, you know, it was a good experience. It was a learning experience, but it was also a surprise. I didn't think I wanted to go back. I had to think a long time about that. But it was nice to feel wanted and feel that they'd made a mistake." |

Drex, Many thanks for that. BTW, have you had the chance to see D.M. in the two original series episodes? My guess is you have, but I just wanted to be sure. |
