This one reminds me a lot of a kind of Twilight Zone that I haven't ever seen. The face of Negelium is a great idea. An ugly alien approximation of what he thinks we see as each other. It's kind of strange, because Negelium isn't really evil, but an uncaring and unfeeling scientist who is performing experiments on trapped space travelers. It might be even cooler if there were other derelict ships with all dead crews killed in different bizarre ways. Anyway, this could be a warning as many Twilight Zone and Star Trek shows do about science and technology robbing us of our humanity, or it could simply be an alien monster Picard must outsmart to save his crew. Either way, this is still one of my favorites, and it's a second season episode. TNG is weird like that. They are so hit and miss, there are fanstastic episodes and absolute nadirs in all seasons. |

I only thought the episode was just Ok. It was a bit slow, but I did like the eerieness feeling to it. Gottal love Worf becoming Psycho.

What about when Data and Troi came in and tried to convince him not to blow up the ship, and it was really Negelium? |

One of my favourites. I also like the foreshadowing by Worf, who gets a little embarassed when Picard asks him for an explanation as to why he is apprehensive. I thought Picard showed a lack of caution in this episode. You could just sense that this thing was ominous yet he wanted Data to scan it like it was just some typical anomoly. It is hard to say whether Negelum was just toying with them, or whether he would have actually carried out his threat. Did Picard really win that round, or did they all just get lucky? I tend to think that Negelum might have been a little more sophisticated than that; like he really needed to torture half the crew to death. The cancellation of the auto-destruct at the end was a nice touch; truly a memorable scene. Also, I liked the way the whole experience seemed to really freak out Riker.... 9/10 Excellent. |

I thought Nagilum made for a very interesting alien. It was an early episode, too--which may be why it was a tad slow for some. |

It was OK, like gdog said, a litttle slow, but it was creepy. |

I just saw the episode last night, and was surprised that I liked it more than before. It was a bit slow, but loved the concept of the crew trapped in a maze, and Picard discussing Death. I loved Pulaski's little Dance to the wall.

It might not have been a dance, but it was when Nigilum first saw Pulaski and sent her to the wall because she was a female. Great scene.

Oh yeah, kinda like Uhura when the ship was hit in Balance of Terror. |

She didn't dance on the wall. She danced to the wall.
