Senator Byrd must deliver some incredible PORK to his constituents. Disgraceful.

Personal Response

I haven't seen the figure in awhile, but at one point a couple of years ago, it was 100:1 per WVa resident vs. per Ohio resident.

The sad thing is that the state is still the scene of incredible poverty - despite Byrd's monuments to himself.

Rose,

I didn't know this either. What kinds of things are you referring to, if I may ask? If it's anything like the state of Maine--which IMO resembles two different states (one rich and the other quite poor, especially north of Augusta)--then I understand.

Personal Response

I interviewed for a job in Parkerburg, West Virginia, once. The interview, with 3 people, took 2-3 hours. They wanted to be very sure that I understood the nature of the area.

Have you seen Coal Miner's Daughter? The interviewers said it was a good representation of what the 'hollers' were like in West Virginia still. Subsistance farming, dependence on coal mining ... the stats on the number of people needing government assistance is pretty high. They told me events costing $1 or $2 per girl would stretch most families.

They also told me the story of the family/clan loyalty. Two years previous, the Day Camp Director (the job was for Girl Scouts) had come from a specific county. (The camp was for girls from several counties.) The camp was packed. The next year, the Director was not from that same county and not a single girl from that county returned to camp. The way it was explained to me was the only thing of value those people had was their children and they would not entrust them to someone they didn't personally know or at least whose family they knew.

I was told specifically that the factor that caused me not to get the job was that another comparably qualified candidate was from the area and they thought she would have an easier time gaining the trust of the people.

Rose,

Wow. That's nearly discriminatory (what you went through, and what you were told about the other candidate and trust). Astonishing.

I have never seen that film, although I need to one day. :)

Although not salient to your points, I would agree with this last part. (As I said, this isn't a response to your job interview--just a general tenet of mine when it comes to our children.)
