News flash: There WAS LITTLE IF ANY "Ethnic Cleansing" in Bosnia. That's why.

Why are we still there?

Wasn't there ? That wasn't what we were told .

You wouldn't happen to have ethnic and family ties with the ones who were doing the ethnic cleansing and persecuting in that nasty little conflict ?

Personal Response

No, that WASN'T what we were told, but apparently it is sometimes OK to lie about the reasons for going to war.

And I will save you the trouble - my folks never got to the European continent. I am Irish, English, and Welsh with a dash of Canadian Native American.

End of Personal Response

Maybe that wasn't what you americans were told, anyone's guess why, for political reasons at the time I suggest. But it was certainly what we here in Australia were told was going.

If it looks and sounds like genocide and ethnic cleansing if some group can be harassed into leaving, and the most everyone in the world says that's what it is , then I'll accept that and I don't give a hang what anyone in the USA has to say about it.

Somerled, if I was editing "flames", most your posts would disappear. Bill should pull back, but so should you.

Interesting that you feel it perfectly acceptable for Australia to ignore what went on in Rwanda, but damn the US for not getting involved.

Americans WERE told that ethnic cleansing took place - before we went in the number was supposedly over 100,000 killed aready. Turns out that was either bad intelligence or an outright lie (depends on how fairly you choose to judge the administration). Unlike Iraq - where the mass graves have been found - they weren't found in Bosnia.

Yes, a number of people were killed. For those who ask how many is too many, I assume that you support the war in Iraq because there the number there is over 300,000 with close to a million simply "missing".

But what 'if it looks and sounds like genocide and ethnic cleansing if some group can be harassed into leaving, and the most everyone in the world says' that's NOT what it is but the US says that it is? If it looks and sounds like genocide and ethnic cleansing, but the world doesn't agree, is it then OK to ignore?

Did I say I thought Australia doing bugger all wrt the genocide in Rwanda was OK ? I think not , I pointed out who was in government at the time and speculated (I'm vague on what efforts - or if any efforts at all - were made by them , but have a feeling it was not much).

Personally, I think that if we have taken it upon ourselves to depose dictators, we should also intervene in ethnic cleansing, no matter the death toll.

The current discussion in the United Nations on Sudan. The US says that it is genocide and ethnic cleansing - the UN can't decide on the definition of genocide and, for that reason, have not responded to the situation in the Sudan.

Personal Response

So, if we do not depose dictators, we should not intervene in ethnic cleansing no matter the death toll?

What if intervening in ethnic cleansing requires that we depose dictators?

Those questions are irrelevant. It is our self appointed duty now to depose dictators, so we should also intervene in ethnic cleansing as well. If there is a systematic erradication of a people, we should act. That is all.

1. Of course you believe everything you hear... :rotfl: Just because you are told something, that means it is true?

2. You really are a jerk, aren't you? (Actually, the word I'm thinking would probably get me banned). I'm Irish, Einstein. I have no connection to Eastern Europe.

I thought we didn't flame here , or are you personally exempt from the Terms of Use.

Keep your abuse to yourself - idiot.

You first, flamer... it is months past time to rein your rantings in and bury them in the boneyard of yesterday.

How do you define ethnic cleansing? How about one Irish Catholic killed by a marauding band of Irish Protestants after an Orangeman speech?

Those questions were clearly trying to manipulate the discussion into another vindictive baiting. I refuse to discuss issues with you further.

So now YOU are the mindreader ...

Calm down - I WAS trying to discuss the issue.

I was seeking to understand your position by requesting a clarification.

My second question flowed from the first.

I will rephrase the two together:

Do you only favor intervening in ethnic cleansing if it does not involve deposing a dictator or if the situation requires it in order to end the ethnic cleansing, is it acceptable to depose the dicatator? (As what happened in Bosnia, for example)

Yes I do. But I am not wrong often.

I'm surprised no one else caught this. Somerlad thinks he's right most of the time. I guess that make anybody that disagrees with him wrong. I had a room mate last year that thought he knew everything. He also thought he was smarter than everyone else. People like that, that think they know every thing, really tick me off. What makes it worse is when the person doesn't know what they're talking about. I think Somerlad needs his ego adjusted.

On day when you grow up and maybe become a parent , you'll be in a position to comment on that , until then butt out . That comment has nothing to do with my ego , it was in regards to parenting.

I'm not commenting on how you parent. I was commenting on how you said you're not wrong very often. People who think that they are always right, or all most always right, are arrogant, because they think they are better than everbody else. People who think they are always right can also be real a--holes.

I totally agree CV.

Maybe that might be right in part.

It's a typical character trait of engineers, most wont easily suffer stupidity or fools or touchy-feelly BS. Others outside the profession often describe us engineers as being arrogant - especially if they don't like our decisions or being dismissed by us.

You might like to see your TYPE ? Personality

I did this several years ago , as part of plant wide assessment by our Personal Department at the time.
