I am not opposed to a Marmite President, provided that I agree with his political opinions. |

Hard to describe - not fruity . It's got a very sharp taste. I actually just had a couple of vegemite sandwiches for lunch (a couple of hours ago and the aftertaste is still there.) It's made from yeast extract. Buy a bottle and try it. |

If Marmite is anything like Bovril, it is incredibly salty, and made from an extract of yeast (Bovril was once made out of bovines). Mostly used to darken and flavor meat gravies. Think of incredibly concentrated soy sauce that has the consistency of cold molasses. |

Marmite sounds nasty just from how AB and Somerled describe it. I don't particularly want an after taste from my meal hours later. I also don't think I will go out of my way to buy it for a taste. If someone I know happens to serve it by chance then I will give it a try. |

More on Vegemite - it has it's own website !! Vegemite - the official site. and for fans - Vegemite For Morons that's the name of the site where they say (
Even you Yanks can get it - Vegemite Snack Pack ![]() or better value - Vegemite 455g .... the stuff lasts for ever in the cupboard - even when its been opened so it would be an nice and strange treat for parties, spread on bread or plain biscuits. |

Only had the aftertaste because I hadn't eaten anything else or had a drink. The aftertaste is not unpleasant and I quite like it. |

I've heard of bovril. As far as I knew you used that more for flavouring other things not as a spread. Marmite tends to be less salty and more tasty. It has an odd taste. Kind of bitter but not in a nasty way. Definitely savory though. |

I've never heard of Marmite, but tried Vegemite once. A friend had a chance to tour Australia and New Zealand for a month for the cost of plane fare so we put together a "theme party". I was the person willing to try the Vegemite. One bite and I was looking for a place to spit it out - I've never tasted anything sooooooooo salty in my life. I was told later that it should be used more like mustard - as a condiment rather than the main ingredient. From the comments here though, it sound like, if you are raised on it, you do eat it by itself. |

Peanut butter is my favorite on toast. There are a variety of jams and jellies. I also make apple butter from scratch and can it. Although it's called "butter", it is actually a jam-like substance. |

Ye asked so ye shall recieve... a reply from me! I have a story to tell. I work in a supermarket, and the other night, i was short staffed, so instead of lounging around in the office as i usually do, i had to do some work. I went on the Jam aisle, because it is small compared to the rest and easy to do. At the end there is Marmite (and Vegemite). Well, there is was happily putting my jam etc on the shelves and all was going well, until i got to the marmite. As i was putting it on the top shelf, to my horror, i saw one fall off the little display tray they come in, on the way down, it hit another shelf, breaking the glass jar, and then it bounced onto my shirt, putting a big brown marmite stain there. OH THE HORROR! I hate Marmite, i hate the smell, i hate the taste, i hate EVERYTHING ABOUT IT! I was covered, i was heaving all night from the pungent smell, and i couldn't even go home to change my shirt as i was locked in until 7am because it was sunday!!!! Needless to say, i don't like Marmite. Later on in the night, i also got covered in the stickiest substance known to man. Yes ladies and gentlemen, it was, the dreaded honey. |
