In the first season, and episode called "Aquisition". The Ferengi disabled Enterprise, and KO's the crew, but Trip was in Decon the the gas they used didn't affect him, and he revevied Archer, and the took the Ferengi on. |

The Ferengi were never mentioned by name in that episode. |

It does become difficult, though, attempting to cover all of the bases when trying not to break with continuity. |

It is a near impossible task. |

They don't have to cover all the bases. DS9 dealt with the Ferengi plenty enough that we won't ever have to see them again in Trek, same with the Borg in Voyager. Enterprise did these shows early in the series run to rope in viewers and establish that they are indeed in the Star Trek universe. It's not necessary though. Good writing can stand on it's own without cameos. |

what do you think of cameos in pilot episodes? McCoy in TNG, Picard in DS9, and Quark in Voyager? |

I liked them. I can't really remember the Voyager pilot all that much except that the Kazon had warp technology but couldn't figure out how to make water from hydrogen and oxygen. McCoy was an excellent way to "legitimize" TNG's pilot. I absolutely love how he says, "You treat her right, and she'll always bring you home." about the Enterprise. It was very good continuity. Picard's cameo was not necessary either, but it fit in quite well with the struggle Sisko was going through in that episode as Picard pretty much embodied his grief and he established himself as quite different from Picard eary on. Don't get me wrong, cameos arn't inherently bad, if there's a good reason to have them, then they're great like Dr. Bashir I Presume and Defiant in DS9. But to have a prequel show and introduce an alien race that is still fairly unknown in the 24th century is kind of lame. There's tons of races that we have not yet seen. Picard says there are over 150 planets in the Federation in First Contact. Granted, some of those are probably colonies, but the races we know to be part of the Federation can still be counted on your fingers. |

Don't forget, there is no Federation in Archer's time. And McCoy's line in TNG you mentioned always gets me choked up. |

McCoy is probably the best part of Encounter at Farpoint for me. And yes, there is yet to be a Federation in Enterprise, and as jj informed me, the three brightest stars on the UFP banner are to be the founding planets. However, it doens't mean they can't meet up with these aliens before they join up. Betazed is supposed to be close to Telar, Vulcan and Earth as well. Wouldn't it be cool to have an Austin Powers type episode with the Betazoids where everybody is naked and they have to manipulate props and scenes to make sure nothing is showing! Maybe not.
