No one ever talks about the ENT-D's bartender, yet she was one of the best written characters on the show. Guianan was more of a councellor than Troi ever will be, and I would want to talk to her. Instead of people like troi who would just ask questions, Guinan would listen. I do wonder though about Guinan's relationship with Q. In Q Who? she put up her hands kind of like the on guard approch. I wonder if he knew how to defeat Q's powers. What were some of your favorite Guinan moments. Woopie was such a great actor for the role, it was a shame we didn't get to see more of her in season 6.

-Deja Q: The scene where Guinan stabs Q with the fork. Don't mess with her.

-Night Terrors: That's setting number 1, does anyone wanna see setting 2?

-Her conversation with Troi in "The Loss." Pity Troi didn't take her up on that

-Her role in both parts of Times Arrow.

Definatly. I like how she had a sense that things were wrong - Yesterday's Enterprise. Woopi was a fan from the start too.

Defintely liked Guinan. She was a very well written charicter. It was too bad we didn't see more of her.

I have a crazy feeling that we haven't seen the last of her. She has been around so long, she could conceivably be on Enterprise or any other incarnation of Trek imaginable.

I always like the way she gave out her advice, by making you work it out for yourself.

Like when Gwordi was having woman trouble.

Something like:

Guinan: "You're doing alright with me."

Geordi: "But i'm not trying now."

Guinan: "Exactly."

small historical tidbit: Gene picked the name Guinan for that role because there was a famous bartender during WWII named Guinan.

Whoopi Goldberg is one of the more intelligent actresses in Hollywood. I just loved her stand up routines when she was on that circuit and her movies (at least most of them) are excellent.

Whoopi was drawn into Star Trek as a child by watching TOS and marveling at Lt. Uhura. There, finally, was a black actress on tv in an important role. When TNG was being created, Whoopi knew she had to be on it.

Some of my favorite TNG episodes, Guinan plays a significant role:

Yesterday's Enterpirse, I, Borg, Time's Arrow, etc. I heard on an interview that Goldberg went to Paramount herself and said she had to be on this show. She also relayed a story about seeing Nichelle Nichols on TOS and was shocked. She told her mom "There's a black lady on TV and she's not a maid!!"

Goldberg is one of the best actresses in Holywood and TNG was lucky to have her. She's also a very good person, she spends plenty of time and money on charity causes.

That sums it up pretty well!

If Guinan was able to sense that something was "wrong" with the universe in "Yesterday's Enterprise," does this mean that one universe was more authentic than the other? Or does it mean that Guinan's conscience was able to maintain some kind of continuity or appreciation of her super-timeline (i.e. the time line that includes both the orginal time line and the alternate time line as experienced by Guinan)?

You know, they never really explain that. Suffice it to say, El Aurians have some strange kind of extra sensory perception regarding changes in the timeline. In Star Trek, apparently, there is only one timeline, and going back in time won't split to another alternate reality as evidence by the many different time travel scenarios since TOS.

Gdog,

I liked Guinan. I really appreciated too how much she enjoyed the show before she became a character on it. The anecdotes she shared on the TNG DVDs were very interesting. :)

She's such a fantastic actress. The Color Purple illustrates this quite well. TNG was lucky to have her. And the scenes she shared with Stewart are still some of the best acted scenes ever on TNG.

Very true--those were memorable scenes. I've maintained for some time (and have written this a couple of times) that she rarely wasted a word when she spoke. I think her words were very carefully written for her.

I think so too. I didn't like her at first, but she grew on me quickly.

I liked her right away. I don't know precisely why, but she was a very welcome addition to the show, and IMO fit right in quickly. :)
