True, there are a lot of bans on smoking like that coming into force over here now, Dublin started it off, now Liverpool is making noises about it, and they are also discussing a countrywide ban.

don't get me started on smoking!!! I can give you a VERY long list as to what cigarettes do to your body and the effect is cumulative! It's not just your heart and lungs that are affected, it's every system in your body!

 Mike, you got it in an earlier post! It's to resolve not to make any resolutions. Whether you keep it or break it, doesn't make a difference, it's still kept.

Jjtrek,

I quit smoking in 1978. Before that, I was up to about three packs per day. I found that when I told someone that I was trying to quit, the pressure was on--meaning that I was frequently asked how I was doing with it. I found that I could not do it after about a dozen tries. However, when I kept it to myself, I found that I could do it. It was when I went one week that I finally knew I had 'kicked the habit.' :)

I don't think I will make that many New Year's resoloutions this year - maybe just to try harder with work, learn patience and post more here!

As for smoking, I quit smoking approximately 4 years ago and my New Years Resoloutions ever since have been not to smoke at all. I have kept them untill 1 month ago, although I did not even have 1 whole ciggarette I just had two puffs of my brother's friends ciggarette at his party, but it feels like I did not stop smoking and had a lot more than a couple of puffs - so I have had to learn how to quit all over again.

My dad did something similar. For years he smoked a pipe. We all hated it. Every night after dinner he would go downstairs and smoke his pipe. One day I followed him down a little after dinnertime and noticed he wasn't smoking his pipe. When I asked him why he said he hadn't smoked it for a week and why didn't anyone notice :loling:

Minuet,

Although I would never advocate smoking, tell me--didn't you ever like the smell of that pipe? I recall cleaning rooms in which pipes had been smoked, and I loved the scent.

I liked the smell when freshly lit - but not afterwards.
