I've heard it said that these anti-trust laws are in violation of the principle of the free market. I agree that they should be better enforced in this and other areas, but to quote Quark from Dogs of War: "What's the point of going into business in the first place if you can't establish a monopoly and gouge your customers."

That is because you have obviously been indoctrinated with the Star Trek: Feringi version of free market capitalism. Never give a sucker an even break and all that socialist satire nonsense, especially on DS9. In free market capitalism, advantage is gained by all from healthy and fair competition and trade. Monopolies and corporate collusion are akin to tyranny. |

Actually, DS9 softened the hard line against capitalism. Notably in Tretchery, Faith and the Great River when Nog explains that everywhere in the universe there is too much of one thing and not enough of another. Capitalism is doing good by bringing things to people they lack and getting currency for the things they have too much of. And I don't think I am indoctrinated, I don't think of real situations based on what I see on Star Trek, I have heard people say that Gates should be allowed to have a monopoly and the anti-trust suit was unfair because he built that empire, and should be able to benefit from it. |

I certainly compare real situations to similar ones in the shows, but I don't make assumptions about real life situations based on what is said about them in any of the shows. (feels need to overexplain )

Windows XP, never had any problems with any MS OSs and I don’t like MAC OSs they aren’t very user friendly when you want to go beyond normal use and manatees. |

I have heard people say all sorts of ignorant things. The whole idea behind capitalism is not the benefit of a few business owners, but the benefit of everyone. It has to be built on competition and integrity or it is not capitalism. Monopolies are more akin to socialism. |

I keep hoping that MS will get some competent competition for its OS. Apple is just not interested in that market, they are interested in the Hummer - Lexus market. Linux in its various manifestations suffers from the average guy not being able to figure out where to start. Which kernel? Which version? Which hardware can I use with what drivers? Does it support blah-blah-blah? I think that this is because of the open source nature of it. This is also anti-competitive. The only place that Linux can take hold is in the server side of the market and the odd computer geek. Go try to play Doom III on it. |

Just keep MS for game use, and Linux for online use as it's less likely to get hijacked by hackers who have something in for Gates. |

True, most of the hacks, adware, spyware are aimed at Internet Explorer, Windows Messenger and similar. I believe it is wise® to use something like Mozilla. But, there have been exploits aimed at Linux and you have to be very careful to keep it updated. |

XP Home. I worked in an IT-company for 13 years selling only Microsoft operating systems yet when I left, none of our own systems was running Windows. For anything critical we used Unix, Linux, OpenBSD or X-windows ourselves. Bit hypocritical come to think of it. |
