Windows XP Professional 64-Bit will release in early 2005.
I believe that there is an updated Windows Server OS coming out in early 2005 as well.

Window TNG, codenamed Longhorn will probably not be out until mid-2006 or later. This will replace XP as Microsoft's flagship desktop OS. There have been several development problems with Longhorn that have delayed it quite a bit, so MS has recently released Service Pack 2 for XP. At one time they claimed that SP1 would be the last Service Pack for XP.

Microsoft has been plagued by security issues with XP and had to retask development resources to work on these issues rather than develop Longhorn. This has probably not made Bill Gates happy as a great deal of money is made on releasing new replacement versions of software (for which people must pay). For instance, W95 (1995) -> W98 (1998) ->Wme (2000) -> WXP -> (late 2001) -> Longhorn (2006?). You can see that there has been a very long delay since XP released.

Also, Longhorn is suffering from what engineers call 'feature creep'. To much stuff is designed in, balooning development time and schedule. A project manager should keep a tight rein on this as it can destroy a project, I have seen many example of this. So MS has recently announce dumping a host of features from Longhorn. Sounds to me like MS lost their way a bit with this.

I'm over MS, am a Linux convert now.

Only needed MS to play games, I'll donate the funds to Sony from now on

Putting Linux up on my home computer. Seems Microsoft only works for so long, and I have to get tech support. Sheesh, you'd think something as widely used as Microsoft would work better.

What market forces are making them improve their products? Currently none.

They have little real and competent competion in the desktop OS market. They have created a monopoly with their Office software, though I don't understand how. It's crap. Microsoft is a good marketing company, I'll give them that.

No, lack of enforcement of anti-trust laws failed us. I believe that Microsoft should have been broken up years ago at least to separate the OS side of the business from the app software side.

Also, I believe that there may have been collusion between Microsoft, Intel and major PC vendor(s) on this. Which is not free market capitalism.

This is akin to blaming conservatives for what moderate Republicans do.

McDonalds faces stiff competition from Burger King, Wendy's, Sonic, Etc. No monopoly that I can see.

That and they are trying to convince people to enlarge their food budget by eating out rather than cooking at home for cheaper. So they are competing with your own home kitchen.

I meant in terms of success , not market share

I see your point. I think that their main hook is getting kids to drag their parents in for cheap toys, happy meals, playland, etc. A very good strategy, IMO.

But the important question to ask is whether or not it would be pertinent to purchase McDonald's stock. :)
