Two reasons, for this poll

A) I want to see if anyone else uses Linux here, if you do, which flavour?

B) To see who is using the oldest version of Windows, 3.1 and 95 would be impossible, but anyone still using 98?

Huh?
I used DSL (Damn Small Linux) on a computer I built in school recently, but alas it was only a diskette-run OS, and became too unstable when I tried booting it off the hard-drive.    :frust: :frust:

Windows XP Professional 64-Bit will release in early 2005.
I believe that there is an updated Windows Server OS coming out in early 2005 as well.

Window TNG, codenamed Longhorn will probably not be out until mid-2006 or later. This will replace XP as Microsoft's flagship desktop OS. There have been several development problems with Longhorn that have delayed it quite a bit, so MS has recently released Service Pack 2 for XP. At one time they claimed that SP1 would be the last Service Pack for XP.

Microsoft has been plagued by security issues with XP and had to retask development resources to work on these issues rather than develop Longhorn. This has probably not made Bill Gates happy as a great deal of money is made on releasing new replacement versions of software (for which people must pay). For instance, W95 (1995) -> W98 (1998) ->Wme (2000) -> WXP -> (late 2001) -> Longhorn (2006?). You can see that there has been a very long delay since XP released.

Also, Longhorn is suffering from what engineers call 'feature creep'. To much stuff is designed in, balooning development time and schedule. A project manager should keep a tight rein on this as it can destroy a project, I have seen many example of this. So MS has recently announce dumping a host of features from Longhorn. Sounds to me like MS lost their way a bit with this.
