So how would you (and I'm not being adversarial) provide incentives to attract better people into the teaching field?

Allowing them to have a more satisfying career, for one. Do you want a high paying job that makes you miserable?

We need good teachers and we need to make it possible for them to use the talent and skill that make them good teachers to be most effective at teaching children while producing a satisfying career for the teacher. This means that the bureaucracy needs to be cut back considerably. How can you teach when you are not allowed to use your creativity and intelligence but rather have to toe a line of administrative guidelines and 'zero tolerance' policies? You can't. You either go somewhere else and find a rewarding career (which is what many good teachers do) or you turn off the talented part of your brain and do what it takes to get a paycheck.

The teachers lose, the kids lose, society loses. The teachers unions and bureaucrats win.

38, you are absolutely right, and I argue that funding must be incresased not only as teacher incentive, but also to reduce class size to increase quality of education for all students.

AB, true that teachers only work 9 months a year, but many put in 12 or more hours a day depending on thier involvement.

I agree that the bureaucracy needs to be trimmed, perhaps schools should get rid of administration all together, and have senior teachers do some of the admin work for extra pay (incentive).

I don't know about the sales tax. If it's a local one, then no. The school I graduated from only had one retailer in the district, and that was Pamida. We did have a bunch of local merchants, but none of them, not even Pamida or the two grocery stores do enough bussiness to support a school, I don't think. My family does most of their shoping in Fort Dodge, forty minutes away, in not only another school district, but a whole other county. So we would acctualy be paying to support the Fort Dodge public school system. Property taxes are okay, but those that don't own property would be paying into the system that they're benifiting from. I really can't think of a way to fairly fund public schools outside of rising tuition. But, then again, I'd like to see the abolishment of the Department of Education and get the federal government out of the schools and leave it up to the states or local governemts.

No, but apparently in order to avoid scathing insults, I must post a warning to asure people that this is my opinion based on personal experience, not an assessment done after months of research.

CV: I propose a state sales tax divided up evenly amoung all schools. Children should all have an equal chance at life and an equal chance at a quality eduaction (IMHO)

Why do you care how people will take what you say? is it really that big a deal what people on a message board think?

Not really, I would just rather avoid unessecary rudeness toward me. I get plenty of that in the real world.

I know what you mean, it seams people just can't be nice these days. I go to restaurants and its seems I am the only one that says please and thank you to our waters and waitresses.
