How about a Voyager Movie
|
This thread is about my wife's viewing of one Lifetime network channel.
 .This stalker network has my wife seeking entertainment from the drama and suffering of fictional female characters, often in abusive situations. Yet she finds this crap interesting and entertaining. Let me tell you something. These types of poisonous TV shows are far worse than.......................anything I can think of.
My question sincerely for women: Do they want to be assailed by brutality and creeps or do they want reason and respect? I know rhetorical, yet this bleeping garbage that the lifetime network puts out is repulsive to me. Why is that drama engaging for women? Play devils advocate for me. Is it Joan of Arc Syndrome or something??????????!!!!!! |

First of all I think you are wayyyyy off about the Lifetime Channel. I watch the Channel every once in a while (I usually prefer the Oxygen channel if I am going to watch a channel that targets women with their movie line-up), and they do sometimes show movies that are about women who are victimized. However, they are usually movies designed to empower women (show that you can persevere in the face of terrible circumstances). Many of those movies are reality based. So that type of “brutality” (I am going to assume you are referring to abuse/rape that type of thing), happens to women all over the world. I can’t speak for all women, just myself, but I will watch a movie like that every once in a while because it is both informative (especially if it is a reality based movie), and often inspirational to see another woman (human being) make it out of a difficult situation (make a positive change in her life). Second, I haven't quite figured out what you are asking in your poll, so I didn't vote. |

The poll is about how you tick, perhaps not well suited to the thread I'll admit. I just find the shows she watches to be disturbing, thats all. How and why is that entertaining and engaging to a woman? The men are assailants, stalkers cheaters and basically bad through and through. It seems so negative and anti productive to relationships. Almost like a Jerry Springer like mentality. Maybe I just can't separate the drama women can. The Lifetime movies seem to always point out the worst in the human spirit, and somehow make an engaging flick that my wife watches. I find them disturbing and poisonous to the soul. That is why I don't get the infatuation with the fictional conflict on her part by watching that stuff. Am I missing something?

Don't make me use my bare hands on you.

I thought that the network was geared toward Merideth Baxter-Bernie fans exclusively. My wife and I used to have the same conversation. I began refering to the network as The Man-Hater Channel |

Jag, the Lifetime Channel definitely does deal with heavier subject material (e.g. heavy drama, suspense). They also show more than just movies that are primarily targeted toward women. Looking at the tv guide, they had Goodfellas on this past Sunday (and tonight). However, I can only take so much of the heavy drama myself. That is why I watch the Oxygen Channel or Women's Entertainment Channel if I am in the mood for a chick flick type film. Looks like Oxygen showed Four Weddings and a Funeral this evening. That’s a cute movie. You should get your wife to check out the Oxygen Channel or WE instead (if you get it). Both are into lighter dramas and romance. You would probably find those channels less off-putting. |

I can't speak for anyone else but myself but of course we want reason and respect but unfortunately, for some women being assailed by brutality and creeps is a reality. When I come across programs like the ones you're referring to, I can honestly say that I start out looking for something entertaining to watch but then end up being horrified by what can be another woman's life or reality. I know it may seem sick but sometimes it's interesting. I watch "Desperate Housewives" on ABC but I can't relate but it's nice to know how some of these fictional characters might live. It's interesting. On the other hand I watch "ER" and can relate because it is my reality. If your wife starts looking at you funny after long periods of watching the Lifetime Channel, I'd ......... oh never mind. Forget I even thought of it.....

I was reading this thread while watching 'Rage' an all night video clip show over here. They have a hip hop special on tonight. There are aspects of male behaviour that might put a similar puzzled look on the ladies faces, why do ALL hip hop videos have girls in bikinis shaking there backsides?! The genre is way past its use by date |

Why is it crap? Just because you don't care for it, doesn't mean she shouldn't. She has a right to watch whatever she wants, without having someone else tell her it's crap. Judging what she watches or likes to do is highly controlling. |

Wow, it really did hit me that I'm a bit different as far as females go. On the poll, I checked off "Where, Why, How" since that's about how my brain works. I'm always looking for the explanation of things, how things work (as a kid, I learned how many toys operated inside - guess how? ). I don't thing I've EVER watched anything on the Lifetime Channel (don't get the Oxygen channel and don't miss it). The only program I watch that has anything like the content described in prior postings is "Law & Order" (in all its present forms). Otherwise it's sci-fi/science for me. This probably puts me in a whole 'nother catagory, I guess. Julia |

In response to proton: I have noticed that. It's like rock was in the 80s. Remember all those David Lee Roth videos? Sheesh. I thought it was tired then. Sure I like to see bikinis on nice shaped women as much as the next guy, but seriously, enough is enough. That's what Baywatch is for after all. (You didn't think it had anything to do with plot or acting did you?)

^^^ Did you know that Roxann Dawson ( B'elanna Torres) once appeared in Baywatch. Not in a red one piece, but as a reporter I think it was |
