Also surprising given Treks world wide audience. US is probably the biggest audience, but European viewers would be a big chunk, France apparently isnt big on Trek but the scandanavians and germans are. I dont know about Russia or South America, but I know its big in Canada Have we actually had a main character that was Canadian? |

Ok, this has got me going, lets look at all the human main characters that were born on earth, this is just from memory, so tell me if Im wrong on any of these: Kirk,McCoy, Uhura: American Scotty: Scottish Sulu: American born japanese Chekov : russian Picard :french born with a british accent ?!?!? Riker, Geordi, Bev, Wesley: American Sisko, Jake: American O'Brien: Welsh wasnt he? Bashir: I think he was born in Pakistan, but his dad had a very dtong british accent Janeway, Chakotay, Kim, Paris: American EMH based on Zimmerman, an american Torres Dad was american Archer, Trip: American Hoshi: supposedly Japanese, but with a very strong american accent Mayweather: grew up on cargos ships, but still amanaged to develop a strong american accent Reed: British accent even though he apparently grew up in malaysia. In summary: so.. 16 / 26 that were all american 3 / 26 born somewhere else but still sounded american 7 / 26 not born in America And only 5 that didnt have american accents: Scotty, Chekov, Picard, O'Brien and Reed |

O'Brien was Irish, and it was never nailed down as to where Bashir was from. |

^^^The episode with his parents showed his mom wearing a sari. That should give some indication of his presumed background. |

Chakotay, I believe was from somewhere in Central America if the some of the flashbacks about his life are accurate. Also, one need not necessarily assume that Torres' father must have been American. With that surname he could easily have been from Mexico or other parts of Central or South America... |

No, it was never said where he was from, even though he must have lived in England for a long time to get an accent like that. |

No, its all just specualtion. I cant find anything on the web about the birthplace of Torres, Chakotay or Bashir. the only thing I found was... "Chakotay is a Native American from a tribe settled on a planet in the Demilitarized Zone " |

I'm almost dead certain Bashir was meant to be British. Remember there are a lot of people of sub-continental decent in Britain. Also Reed's accent could be attributed to his British lineage....Isn't it established that his father was Royal Navy? Malaysia is (at least today) part of the Commonwealth so he could have associated largely with British ex-pats. Anyway, it's time for an Aussie or even a Kiwi I say. |
