Okay, I think every Star Trek series has now had Nazi episodes (some more than one). Are these guys addicted?
What's that all about?
Wouldn't you think a series set in the future would have a real hard time running into Nazis?!

I am drawing a blank here, but when did TNG have Nazis?

Oh, :realmad:
I guess I assumed with all the holodecking they did they hit the Nazis (maybe because of the hardboiled private eye episodes they did).
Ya got me, TNG and DS9 had enough quality they didn't resort to Nazis.
TOS, Voyager, and now Enterprise wen to the Third Reich.
Maybe that's the bellweather for quality in Star Trek: you go to the Nazis, you aren't making the grade.

TOS was top quality and it's Nazi episode was a good introduction to the reasons behind the Prime Directive.

Well - it was a benchmark era in 20th century and so why not ?

The nazis were pretty nasty too so setting an episode in the nazi era lends itself to an exploration of evil.

I agree with both somerled and Min on this one.

And if you want Nazis in DS9, just watch any episode with Cardassians.

I won't, for the moment at least, address Enterprise or Voyager's utilizing the Nazi's, but I will attempt to defend the usage by TOS. If you recall, that episode involved a professor somehow implementing what he saw as some benevolent aspects of the Third Reich. Trying to see what would happen if such an regime, not run by a madman, might have a different result. If anything, TOS took a very provocative step in some of what it said about that period of our history (especially when one considers that some those statements were made by Spock, portrayed by Leonard Nimoy, who just happens to be Jewish) and the Nazis in particular. They suggested that, all things considered, it was a very effective system only that you could not carry it out without it degenerating into what it was in reality anyway.

Yeah, DS9 had Nazis but like all good sci-fi, they disguised real life stories with a sci-fi screen so many stories involving a totalitarian military state could be explored without resorting to the symbol everyone is familiar with. That's good sci-fi writing. It's always going to catch someone's eye when you have Nazis, because they're everybody's favorite bad guy. Whether or not it makes sense to have them in space in the future is another matter entirely.

You should clarify "early" episode with the cardassians. I'd say in about the second season, they became more complex and interesting. Also, don't forget that Kira did train them to be resistance fighters.

True, they're not exactly Nazis, but their governments are very similar. But again, this is good sci-fi writing to create a parody rather than use the real version which is pretty implausable.
