Although it's stated in TNG that tobacco is no longer used, (In Time's Arrow part II when Clemens wants a cigar, Troi says they'll have to replicate one) there are other drugs which are both illicit and legal mentioned in DS9.

I think prostitution is legal on Rhisa too.

And of course, Picard brought money with him to give to Ro (false pretenses) in Preemptive Strike. ;)

Just carious, can the federation replicate money, such as gold pressed latinum? If they don't have money, how do they do business with traders.

On DS9, i think the Federation gives serving officers so much a week or something.

I think it's mentioned somewhere the gold is replicatable, but latinum is not, can't remember where though.

And I think you'd be spot on there Welsby, on DS9 they'd need currency, otherwise the only place they could eat is the replimat.

Also, this is an oldie, but in 'Mudd's Women' didn't Kirk make some mention to paying the miners for...somthing?

Perhaps, but he could have meant compensating them with somethin else instead of currency.

Timbo,

Is this the passage to which you are referring?

****************

I'm James Kirk, captain of the Enterprise.
This is my science officer Mr. Spock.
Let's get right to business.
We've got lithium crystals.
I'm authorized to pay an equitable price.
We're not sure they're for sale.
We might prefer a swap.
What did you have in mind?
Mudd's women.

That's it.

Definite reference to currency.

That to me indicated he meant cash. Then he say we might 'prefer' a swap, although money is available.

It would be interesting to find out just what Kirk meant by that. Maybe Bonja or TribbleMom know?
