Gdog,

Nice post. But you are not a 'fan boy' (you know, cool explosions, fights, sexy scenes, etc.).

Fan Boy has kinda negative connotation. I was trying to be positive. :)

Unforntunately, it takes someone with a wide attention span to appreciate the fact that DS9 was one huge story. Like you said, seasons 1-3 were not all that exciting, but they set up the scene for what is to come. Plus it illustrates how a species just coming out of a half decade war would integrate themselves into the Federation who has a peace treaty with their former oppressors. It's very political, which I find interesting because it deals with more real kind of problems rather than trying to figure out how to hurt someone.

I have a wide attention span, but there is only so much boredom it can tolerate and I am not going to devote my life to a TV show, just a message board based on a TV show. ;)

I didn't mean that as an insult, I just meant to point out that since DS9 is in essence one huge story, the beginning will be a bit dull. Look at Lord of the Rings. Fellowship had some action in it, but not near as much as the latter two movies. Similarly, when you read a book, it takes some time before you get to the action part because the characters have to be established first. No offense intended.

I agree with your reasoning. I just didn't find many of the characters in DS9 compelling enough for me to devote the mental energy necessary for getting to know them. Everytime there was some exploration of the Feringi or Cardassian condition, I wanted to turn the channel to an infomercial.

It is a matter of personnal taste. I hate sushi, but some of my good friends love it.

I agree that the multiple Ferengi episodes was overkill. I liked some of them, but more often than not, they were too silly. We only saw a couple Trill episodes, and I would've liked to see a few more Vulcans in the series as well.

Anyway, it is good that Star Trek has this diversity between DS9 and Voyager whether intended or not. I am not very interested in DS9 and I stay out of the DS9 forum as I have nothing good to contribute and I don't want to bash and start trouble.

I liked Voyager for lots of reasons and I don't mind the legitamite criticisms of the show.

It is just a matter of personal taste, which is unlike politics where I am right and everyone who disagrees with me is wrong.

CPA, you say that you liked the show because of the secondary cast, but (And no offense) that is a really crappy reason for liking the show. The show was more than explosions, or the secondary cast, it was drama, intrigue, and full of growth for everyone.

Garak, Dukat, Martok and Weyoun stole the show in the last 4 seasons. ( Even Winn to some degree)

Characters fueled by great actors.

Even you've got to admit that some of the leads had less screentime as a result.

I dont see how thats a crappy reason for liking the show, they were great.

Garak was my favourite character from DS9, so deliciously cunning, sly and sarcastic

Boring leads? You mean like Harry Kim? Kes? Neelix?

Yeah, when I posted that, I thought of examples in Voyager

Hey, I'm with you on Kes

Neelix - well he was annoying, but I wouldnt call him dull ( just like Rom, Quark and Wesley - all annoying to me, but I wouldnt call them dull, at least they evoked a reaction from me)

The only two that were dull on Voyager were Harry and Chakotay, both of which got less and less screentime as the series progressed ( The Mayweather Syndrome )

With the Tediuos Trio ( Dax, Bashir, O'Brien ) all the episodes that revolve around them that are good, involve them in a tense situation or a plethora of interesting secondary characters.

Like Hypocratic Oath or HardTime - good episodes as they are in a tense situation - good episodes cos of the story not the characters

But when a story has to rely on their personalities or charm, it breaks down - like in 'Distant Voices', 'Badda-Bing' or Rejoined ( If it wasnt for the kiss, I wouldnt bother rewatching that ep ).....actually just looking through the episode list, there arent very many episodes that had one of these three in the lead without relying on the secondary characters.

Then you have eps like 'Our Man Bashir' were Bashir is the lead, but has the show stolen by the better actors. Meaney overacts and it comes off as obvious, Visitor overacts and it is captivating

I liked both series, but had/have a preferrence for DS9. I've always thought that after TOS it had the best chemistry between characters, and some of the most well deeloped supporting characters Trek has ever done.

I also have to ring in that I like the first 3 seasons as well. There were definitely some clunkers in there, and it did take awhile to find its voice. The stories involving "The Circle" in season 2 were really fascinating (once again I see parallels between it and what's happening in the world today).

I voted that I liked both, because I did. But DS9 was defiantly the superior to the two, add with the fact that the producers of trek placed DS9 on the back burner when VOY came out in regards to importance you can really appreciate what the cast and crew of DS9 had to do in order to make it superior. I think it was this struggle to be seen in the same light in terms of importance as VOY is what made DS9 better. The cast and crew of VOY just got very thing they needed and wanted and so it was no big deal. The cast and crew of DS9 had to fight for things they needed and wanted so once they got it they did the most they could with it.

VOY was a good trek as far as flipping the TV on and immersing ones self into a story with little effert.

DS9 was a good trek in that it made the viewer think, it wasn’t cut and dry.

But the best thing about DS9 as my wife put it was the fact that it was more real, the caricatures where real people with real depth that made it easy to connect to and understand, The episodes where closer to real life then science fiction.

When exactly did it make you think?, and did it make you think any more regularly than the other series?

We would have to go through each episode to answer that.

In my opinion I think TNG and DS9 where more thought provoking shows then the rest.
