There a been a series of related events culminating in the latest news. Let me bring you up to speed in case you arent aware of this story. Back in March 64 men were arrested in Zimbabwe on charges of plotting to overthrow the President of Equitoral Guinea. 15 men were also arrested in Equitoral Guinea on similar charges. They were alleged to have links to Spain, Britain and the United States. The leader of the group, a South African Nick du Toit, was reported to have sent a message to London asking for help from some senior figures, including a member of Mrs Thatchers Government. Now today Mrs Thatchers son, Sir Mark Thatcher, has been arrested in South Africa on suspicion of "providing funding and logistical assistance" to those involved with the coup attempt. As an aside, but possibly a relevant one, a couple of years ago it was found Equitoral Guinea, until then one of the poorest nations, had oil wealth. I wonder what has been going on. A private venture? A secret Anglo/American/Spainish venture that went wrong? Who can say at this stage. Still the arrest of the son of a former Prime Minister, particularly Mrs T, is a story. |

With the number of people in Africa with aids, the outbreaks of Ebola and other diseases, the starving millions, the massacres and the civil wars happening on the continent, I personally think the rest of the world should take a hands off approach and generally write off most of the continent as a bad idea. No matter what action the West has taken in the past to help out, nothing seems to be enough, and most of the governments certainly don't seem to care enough about their own people to help. Am I getting cynical in my old age? |

My thought ... Marxist and socialist nations are so bent on making the West look bad, they'd do almost anything to score a propaganda coup. |

Cynicism is a sign of wisdom, not old age, but wisdom sometimes accompanies old age. Wisdom rarely accomanies youth.

Something Wicked This Fae Comes

It wouldn't surprise me. What does surprise me is the suspected involvement of Mark Thatcher. Equatorial Guinea, that is a name I haven't heard in a while. My impression of their President, Obiang, is that he is corrupt as the day is long. He lives like a king off the profits made from oil production, while making very few, if any, improvements for the quality of life for his people. That country is a powder keg waiting to happen. You have a corrupt President who doesn't give a $h1t about his own people, oil companies who love that he is in power because of the sweet deal he has given them (this will create a lot of resentment), and a citizenry who don't reap the benefits of the oil revenues. With that mix, I can easily foresee civil war, bloodshed, attempted coups. Hmmm…there was a story on this a while back. Yes, yes here it is. It was originally broadcast 11/03, but it has been updated. Kuwait Of Africa? |
