Which injuries are medal-worthy?

I have no idea. I would ask though if the circumstance in which a person sustains an injury is factored in when determining if a person should be awarded a Purple Heart. This might explain why someone with less serious injuries receive the medal.

Ultimately though, if the military makes the decision to award the medal to someone, I am going to try my best not to begrudge them that honor (even when injury sustained isn’t major). Admittedly, if someone were to get a little scratch, and got a medal, I would probably think the criteria for awarding the medal was a bit too low.

What does this have to do with Kerry, Sisko? The circumstances were not the same. A Purple Heart has certain minimum standards. Did your grandfather put himself in for a Purple Heart? If not, there's one circumstantial difference.

Just trying to determine the criteria. Someone said something about not even bleeding. What are the minimum requirements?

Thanks AB, but I don't get how Kerry doesn't deserve his. He didn't give himself the medals. It also doesn't require extensive injury as was implied:

(5) Examples of injuries or wounds which clearly do not qualify for award of the Purple Heart are as follows:

(a) Frostbite or trench foot injuries.

(b) Heat stroke.

© Food poisoning not caused by enemy agents.

(d) Chemical, biological, or nuclear agents not released by the enemy.

(e) Battle fatigue.

(f) Disease not directly caused by enemy agents.

(g) Accidents, to include explosive, aircraft, vehicular, and other accidental wounding not related to or caused by enemy action.

(h) Self-inflicted wounds, except when in the heat of battle, and not involving gross negligence.

(i) Post traumatic stress disorders.

(j) Jump injuries not caused by enemy action.

You can get a purple heart for food poisoning and disease not directly caused by enemy agents. So if you catch cold, you qualify.

No one can give themselves a Purple Heart, but someone can write up the action report and submit requests for a Purple Heart, based on that report.

No, you cannot get a medal if you catch cold.

As to Dole's comment that Kerry did not bleed, is it possible to catch shapnel and not bleed? Am I missing something?

Speak softly, and carry a 57 megaton stick!
Sisko, reread your post. The definitions given are circumstances where a Purple Heart can't be given.

Thus a cold would fall under category (f) and food poisoning would fall under category © unless the enemy released the cold germs or poisoned the food.

Category (j) reminds me of another person I know. He was an Airborne Ranger who severely injured his back during a jump into Iraq. He wasn't given a Purple Heart I believe.

gvok: are you saying that the National Guard is cowardly? You can't badmouth Bush's service in the Guard that way unless you are implying that the Guard itself is full of people afraid to go to combat. In that case I have a LOT of friends who would like to have a little talk with you.

Finally, if Kerry actually was wounded by the enemy in a way that justifies the Purple Heart, fine, he got them, end of discussion. I believe that the main question is whether or not Kerry doctored the reports to make it look like he earned the Hearts when he didn't.

How embarassing! Hen buhaoyisi!

Amazing how big you can misinterpret something by missing a three letter word. I am buzzing so fast lately, It's been easy for me to miss little things.
