Kerry files FEC complaint

I can't help but think, what a crybaby! I think they are doing this because the Swift Boat ads are having an effect.

This from the AP:

In a statement released to reporters, Kerry's campaign announced it had "filed a legal complaint against Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (SBVT) before the Federal Election Commission (news - web sites) (FEC) for violating the law with inaccurate ads that are illegally coordinated with the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign."

The move by the Kerry campaign came shortly after the Swift Boat group released a second ad attacking the Democratic presidential candidate, who was wounded three times while serving on a Swift Boat in Vietnam and decorated twice for valor.

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth have accused Kerry of lying about one of the wounds he suffered and of embellishing his acts of heroism during his four months in Vietnam, charges strongly rejected by the senator from Massachusetts.

Kerry on Thursday accused the Bush administration of using the Swift Boat veterans as a front group to do the "dirty work" of attacking his Vietnam War record.

The New York Times on Friday reported that there is a "web of connections" between the Swift Boat group and the "Bush family, high-profile Texas political figures and President Bush (news - web sites)'s chief political aide, Karl Rove."

Moderators might consider merging this thread with DS9074s about why Kerry didn't file a slander/libel suit. The two are linked even though they are different topics.

You're Wrong Skipper,

The reason is much more destructive than Kerry being a mere crybaby.

First, by filing suit Kerry butresses the claim that the SwiftBoat ads are filled with falsehoods and the claim that the Republicans are lawbreakers. In effect wrapping himself in victim status. We all know how American culture has confused or at least blurred the line between victim and hero.

Second, Kerry forces the Swift Boat org. to divert funds and human resources from their ad campaign to defending, or at least representing their case, before an FEC investigation.

Might not be a bad strategy. We'll have to see how it plays.

In that case, I'll have to make a donation to the Swift Boat Vets, and get my VRWC buddies to all make donations too.

(time to go polish my black helicopter!)

I wonder what the reaction would be form the left if Bush had filed a FEC complaint over Movon.ord ads depicting Bush as Hitler?

Bush would have to claim an illegal connection between Moveon and the Kerry campaign, the DNC or persons involved in the Democratic party's attempt to get Kerry elected.

Remember Dante, Kerry isn't claiming defemation, he is claiming the the Republicans and the Swift Boat org are coordinating their efforts in direct violation of federal election laws.

If there were claims against the Dems and "independant" organisations. it should investigated with te same vigor that the present allegations will be investigated.

I think the Kerry suit and the Swift Boat ads are making voters look at Kerry's past following Vietnam (especially the anti-war activities of the 1970s), which I don't think was what Kerry wanted.

There's an article in today's LA Times (unfortunately, you need a subscription to read it)

It does start with:
Quote:

After making his service in Vietnam the centerpiece of his presidential bid, Sen. John F. Kerry now finds himself defending his role as a protester of the war — the chapter of his biography that first gained him prominence but which he has discussed infrequently this year.

I know that Rose will be happy to know that more people get to hear how Kerry accused fellow vetrans of war crimes. These peope are the sons and daugters of such veterans and I doubt they will take kindly to Kerry's blanket statements.

How about studying veitnam? there were quite a few war crime commited over there. And Kerry wasn't the only one to testify to that. Frankly, this betrayal thing is a peice of bullcrap. He told the truth. He told the truth about what was happening across the world so that the solders could come home. he went to the war (volentaraly), and discovered that they had all been lied to, and there were things happening over there that were not exactly right. He came back as soon as he could so he could try to stop the war. and if that didn't make sense to you, I sugesst you go back to kindergarden.

If it was the truth why has he rescinded it, by saying he may have exaggerated? - and why are so many vets saying its untrue? What makes his word more valuable then theirs? I dont know what the real answer is, but it certainly not bullcrap.

Getting back to the topic of John Kerry filing an FEC complaint, I wonder if anyone is awake at the FEC?

To whit:

Quote:

"The Democratic Party is partnering with MoveOn.org, People for the American Way, Campaign for America's Future, and dozens of other groups representing millions of Americans to organize a massive public mobilization. On Wednesday, May 14, join us by calling and emailing your representatives in Congress to let them know that the majority of Americans oppose more irresponsible tax cuts that go overwhelmingly to the wealthiest sliver of Americans."

Message sent by Democratic Party Women’s Vote Center in May, 2004.

I know someone's (or someones') gonna want a link, so here it is (scroll down to the bottom):

http://www.democrats.org/wvc/issues/200305120002.html

I wonder how long it will be before this vanishes? I'm going to save the page, just to be sure.
