Najaf - a different perspective

Now I have said that by holding the Holy shrine in Najaf and using as a military base Moqtada Sadr has effectively defiled the site himself, that if nessasary he gets what it comming to him. However just consider a hyperthetical argument for a minute to get a different perspective.

Say there was a Muslim superpower in the world and Europe was a little weaker but still predominatly Christain. Say that Italy was trying to develop WMD and that Muslim power invaded Italy. A few months later a Bishop is holding out in St Peters in Rome, determined to make a stand as he sees it against the muslims who are all but running the country. The Muslim army masses its forces round Rome and in the end has to destroy St Peters to take out the Bishop. Did the Bishop defile his church by making a stand there at his holy site? And what would the reaction be across Christain Europe - mass anger? I wonder if some of the Christains of Europe would start to suicide bomb the Muslim superpower knowing that their own countries were too weak to take it on? I wonder if some of the countries would try and develop nuclear weapons to ward off the threat of invasion?

Just some thoughts, I'm not trying to make a case for Islamic terrorism so please dont see it like that.

I'm not Catholic so take that into account.

I would say that the Bishop had defiled the site.

I wouldn't call mass anger, let alone homicide bombings, on the part of Christians a reasonable response.

I would think that there would be a great number of Catholics storming the place themselves to kick the idiot out. If this shrine is so important to Shiites, why don't they do more to protect it?

Time to put something here
I would say it is his fault, if the place was so important to him, he would not take shelter their. In fact if it meant that much to him and his people, he should chose to walking up to an enemy tank and say "take me away" before ever allowing the chance for the holy place to be damaged or destroyed.

If anything it proves what little respect these people have for their own holy places by allowing it to be used in such a manner.

It depends whether they see themselves as protecting and guarding the holy site in not allowing those they see as invaders to enter, or whether they are using it as cover to provide protection to themselves.

Some of the foot soldiers might believe that, but Sadr knows that he wins whether the US attacks the mosque or not.
