It goes back to the old principle that it is not the two leaders standing for election it is individual MPs in individual constiuencies. It is also because of the feeling that debates should be held in the House of Commons, where members from all constituencies have the change to intervene in the debate. A TV debate between the PM and Leader of the Opposition would be between only two MPs, the Honorable Member for Sedgefield and the Honorable Member for Folkestone & Hythe, rather than the whole House. I in fact find that to be an outdated concept, a lot of people voted Labour not because of their constiuency candidate but because of Blair, the same could be said with the Conservatives and Thatcher. Yet you know what Britain, certainly establishment Britain is like when it comes to preserving traditions and customs. |

Hey, I want to see a few good issue debates myself, but every week leading up to the Election? It just isn't practical IMO. Kerry Challenges Bush to Weekly Debates |
