Speak softly, and carry a 57 megaton stick!
I just played Call of Duty for the PC and I have to say that it is the most enjoyable WWII sim that I have played to date. There are few games in existance where I am simultaneously looking around taking in the beautiful graphics while ducking for cover from an expert AI trying to blow my head off.

The graphics in this game are spectacular. They are able to recreate the opening scene from "Enemy at the Gates" perfectly. The soldier's mouths move in exact synch with their words when they talk. You get all kinds of facial expressions when looking at them, and the levels are just breathtaking in their realism.

The graphics are just frosting on the cake though. There have been many games that have boasted great graphics only to have horrible gameplay. Call of Duty does not fall into that genre. The AI in this game is razor sharp. You will see your allies and the enemy taking cover wherever they can. Your allies will toss grenades at enemy strong points and the Germans will either scurry out or they will actually pick up your grenade and hurl it back at your forces! Amazingly, both the graphics and the large number of players in the game hardly is a strain on my system which is nearly 2 years old.

Plotwise, the game is a little weak. You play as a faceless character for the United States, United Kingdom, and Soviet Union forces. Aside from giving these characters names, you don't learn anything about them. Also, don't expect to get much in the way of character interaction between you and your allies. They will be too busy either shooting or advancing to have many conversations with you. This is probably for the best though, as you are going to loose a lot of buddies in this game (especially in the Soviet campaign).

The levels take you through a lot of historical times in WWII such as the charge in Stalingrad and the assault on the Reichstag. As the US soldier, you start off as a pathfinder for the American paratroopers prior to the D-Day invasion. You then conduct assaults of various anti-aircraft and artillary positions before being chosen to lead a raid on a German base to rescue British officers with vital information for the Allies.

The British campaign puts you in the boots of a British Special Forces soldier. As such, you conduct a number of sabotage raids against German dams and eventually wind up knocking out the anti-air capabilities of the Turpitz herself.

As a Soviet conscript, you start out as an unlucky soul charging up the hill to Stalingrad with only a clip in your hand. You take an alternate route (running towards machine gun nests without a weapon being suicidal), and wind up being a sniper, then being assigned as a tank commander due to a lack of crews. Finally, you are with the group that assaults the Reichstag and plants the hammer and sickle on top of it.

Throughout all this, you will notice that you aren't a one man army fighting off the Germans singlehandedly (except for a couple missions where you are on your own). You will find that you are just one man in an army fighting together to bring down the fascist menace.

The one downfall of this game is that it is relatively short in length. I beat it in only a few hours myself. However, I will probably be replaying it quite a few times just because of the immersion factor.

If you like WWII games and have $40 dollars to spare, then you would be doing yourself a disservice not buying this game.

I'm Captain Kirk!
Sounds Great! I need to get a decent video card. My computer has on-board graphics and they are no good for gaming. I could use my wife's computer, but I don't want to her mouth. :(
