Has Iraq become the US's "West Bank"?

One of the reasons (as I understand it) that Israel is reluctant to pull out of the West Bank and Gaza is that it will give the terrorists a home base from which to attack Israeli territory. Now that Iraq has been destablized, if the US pulled out it would it not then become the new Afghanistan from which terrorists could set up shop?

Speak softly, and carry a 57 megaton stick!
The whole Middle East is a terrorist stronghold. The reason that we don't want to leave Iraq is that we can set it up as a base to attack the terrorists from.

Don't make me use my bare hands on you.
Well, we're sure treating it like a "Bank" dumping all that money in to it.

But seriously, I think it stands alone and is not easy to throw in a basket with a label on it and call it 'Vietnam' or 'The West Bank'. It is just another in a long string of 'Daddy has to go clean up the mess the European Empires left behind cause they won't or can't do it' type actions. Sorry, couldn't resist.

It (Iraq) is a big problem now that it's drawing in everyone with a bone to pick with the west - the USA in particular.

People thought Afganistan was bad news - Iraq has the potential to be something that makes Talibanic Afganistan look like Disney Land - expecially if the country experiences a civil war as a result of (the largely USA / UK) interference.

Time to put something here
Why do people want to pull out? – We’re there that cant be changed, pulling out will only make things worse (whether you think things are fine or not). - Why is this even an issue? Why don’t people no longer want to pay the consequences of their actions?

That is why we can not and will not pull out. I need to go to a different thread. :(

Iraq may be unstable now, but we have to stick around long enough for it to become stable again (at least as much as it may possible in that region).

Dandandat,

An excellent question, perhaps worthy of the Philosophy thread. We (and others) could discuss this one for hours....
