Okay, let's set up a scenario. You must join the military in your country, but you can choose whatever branch you want and any career inside that military. What would you want to be, Ordinance, Supply, Artillary, Infantry, Aviation? I am just curious at how your interests would be applied to the most varied organizations in the world. |

^^^ Aviation. I would love to fly jets. My second choice would be to work on submarines. |

I would join the Army and I would want to be in the infantry. One of my wishes/dreams as a kid was to lead men into combat. I wouldn't want to be a general, but maybe a junior officer. I friend of mine who is in Iraq once told me that I was a good man and he wished I was his Squad leader. I've always had positions of leadership and I've always took care of my people. That's why some of my crew call me First Sergeant. After I retire, I would love to teach military history. |

You would either want to be a Platoon Sergeant. They have, in my opinion, the best jobs in the entire Army. They are pretty much the real leadership in the Platoon, not the Platoon Leader. The Platoon Leader takes care of most of the administrative work for the Platoon, keeps the higher officers from micromanaging the Platoon (I FREAKIN HATE THAT! ), and does go into combat with them. However, the Platoon Sergeant is the one who is with the Platoon while they are training, while they are in combat, and anything else. The Platoon Sergeant is the heart and soul of any infantry unit.

Well , I would refuse point blank for ethical reasons. But if it was a choice between military service and a very long term in prison or being executed , then I would opt for the senior service as an engineer. I have absolutely no interest in leading men into combat, but have skills which would make me more useful in a technical role. |

Engineering is a very highly respected field in the military. They set up portable bridges so tanks can cross ravines and rivers. They also construct a great variety of equipment that soldiers use in the field. You would also set up traps and minefields to use against enemy positions. |

I have a story to tell that is somewhat related to this. A friend of mine, now an English teacher, served in Vietnam back in 1969-1970. As part of being drafted, he had to fill out some forms. When it listed occupation (or a synonym thereof), he listed what it was he wanted to be. He was rushed, so he abbreviated what his chosen profession was to 'Eng.' You got it--he was assigned to some section that had to do with Engineering (infrared technology, I think)--all because he didn't spell out the word 'English' on the form. A true story! |

I don't think there is an English branch in the military. Maybe AG or some kind of communications role? If he did put down english on his paper, he would probably have ended up in the Infantry. |

I'd want to be the guy that blows stuff up, the guy that gets to carry around the rocket launcher, or grenade launcher or those shoulder SAMs or whatever. A gunner of some sort, if in mobile infantry, the guy that shoots the tank cannons, or if in the navy, the guy that mans the AA artillery. My knowledge of Military weaponry is showing here, I have no clue, but yeah, as long as I get to blow stuff up
WTH does that mean Spongebath? - youd never sign up, even if Newcastle was under siege? If drafted I would not try to resist, I'd go in wanting to blow stuff up ,wouldnt really care who it was against. My opinions on any conflict would have nothing to do with whether I was drafted or not. I may not like it when I get there, I may be shellshocked, and distruaght at my fallen mates, but it is war. Part of the human way, there has always been war and there always will be. |

In the Army, CP, you would want to either be in Demolitions (you would set explosives and be in the Infantry for the most part), Artillary, or a gunner in an Armor division. They are the ones who get to "blow stuff up" the most. You might also consider Air Defense where you would get to shoot planes and helicopters out of the sky (assuming we ever go to war with somebody with a decent air force again). Like Air Defense loves to say "If it flies, it dies". |
