No Bin Laden, No "Truce with Europe"

It seems Osama Bin Laden would like a truce with Europe. All we have to do is withdraw from "their countries".

We must NOT go along with this, we cannot let this split our coalition. The tape says attacks on the US and Israel will continue regardless. European nations should remember that after 9/11 we activated NATO's common defense pact. It was a formal gesture but with meaning. An attack on America is an attack on us. Additionally to withdraw from the Middle East now, particularly on the say-so of a terrorist, would be a disaster. The burden for security would fall on the US alone. That is something it shouldnt have to bear.

Stop all al-Qaeda activity, hand yourself over to international authorities and then, maybe, we could think about a "truce". Not before.

ds9074, I like your attitude, but you must know and understand that you're in the minority.

I fully expect that most of Europe will be out of this in less than a year. Also within that year, I expect that Italy, Poland or England will experience large scale terrorist attacks such as was seen in Spain.

This is going to get very ugly before it gets better.

Time to put something here
and as an insider DS what do you think the European countries will do?

One legit point of view on this offer of truce to the Europeans is that it is proof that the War on Terror is actually going pretty good. At least good enough that bin Laden can't simply go tit for tat - he must break up the coalition.

Apparently we look like this now
If the terrorists get Europe to withdraw from this war, there will be future attacks there anyway. The next thing they will want is for everyone to stop trading with the US, and anyone who doesent will be attacked. It never ends with them. They will always have a reason in their minds to do whatever the hell they want. I just hope these European nations realize this.

They do. Bam: http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/...tape/index.html
I think Europe is on our side in this respect. It's primarily Iraq they were fighting over. Heck, even with Iraq most European nations sent in their troops. And if most are willing to directly support us (with troops) in Iraq then all are going to support us on one respect or another on Al Qaeda. The thing is, will Al Qaeda try to attack the US to make Europe scared, or back off and just hide for a while until things go over and they lose the CIA.

I don't.

Outside of pay lip-service to fighting terrorism, many Europeans actually want America to fail at the War on Terror, becauses they think it's some capitalist imperial war.

I think the European gov'ts have enough brains to figure they'll get hit eventually.
But this is one of those many reasons the USA needs good foreign relations; there wouldn't have even been this question if all the western nations were united on the Iraq issue.

Its a Ruse, first if Europe said okay we'll do it. Bin Laden will win that battle and continue to attack America. Notice only Europe? They already did it to Spain and Spain went off like a coward.

That's the way many Americans are interpreting it, but I think is more a case of bad gov't.
The bomb hit and the Spanish gov't went to some pretty big lengths to tie it to the sepratist movement. When it came to light it was actually Al Quieda, the voters revolted and voted for the opposition because they were decieved.

No, they voted that way because they were scared.

Actually this is what Al-Queada wanted, someone to back off. If they do this to all our allies, we will be on our own. It remins me of a quote from Deep Space Nine "We will keep fighting until we cannot fight anymore".

And some of our so called allies are just looking for an excuse to abandon America.

For me, the relationship between America and Europe is supposed to work like the relationship between sailors and marines.

Sailors and Marines are both members of the U.S. Navy, and often they fight like siblings. But if you pick a fight with one, you better watch out, because you just picked a fight with the other.

When it comes to Europe and America, in many instances it seems this is no longer the case.
