April 12th sees the 50th anniversary of the release of 'Rock around the clock' by Bill Hayley and the comets, what many consider to be the first Rock and Roll song.

I may hijack this opportunity, to ask you all to list what was the best Rock song in those 50 yrs, just rock songs please.

I want to say Nirvana : Lounge Act, but that is just a sympton of my generation, if I wish to be completely objective I would have to say...

Beatles :Twist and Shout or
Led Zepplin: Rock n Roll or
G'n'R : Welcome to the Jungle

Twist and Shout is a great R&R song, but give credit where it's due. The Beatles version is a straight cover of The Isley Brothers.

I couldn't keep it to one, and this list is not in order or all-conclusive

Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
A Day In The Life - Beatles
Locomotive Breath - Jethro Tull
One Way Out - Allman Brothers
Happy Jack/I Can See For Miles/Magic Bus - The Who
Werewlves of London - Warren Zevon

CP,

Goodness, what a question. This can't help but be subjective, but I think I will go with these five:

1) She Loves You (Beatles).
2) Please Please Me (Beatles).
3) Tell Me Why (Beatles).
4) Not Fade Away (B. Holly).
5) Well Alright (B. Holly).

Best cover? Hmmm. Probably Anna, Twist and Shout, and Chains.

I'm not a fan of golden oldies, and classic rock because I've heard these songs a million times over. My favorite music was the 80's metal. I was a teenager, and musically influenced by these bands. With that in mind, here is my list...in no particular order. (classic rock...I still love the early stuff though.)

Deep Purple...Smoke on the Water

Yes...Roundabout

Meatloaf...Bat Out of Hell

The Kinks...You Really Got Me. Gotta include The Kinks, because they introduced guitar distortion.

Smoke on the Water is one of my earliest rock recollections. Back in the 70's my neighbor was putting together a band, Deep Purple was one of their favorites, so of course this song was one they tried to perfect. Have to say that it is one of my all time favorites as a result.

I always preferred Black Knight to Smoke on the water.

Funny also no one mentioned Good Vibrations, on ethat tops the polls every few years when they do such polls

I'm a bit disappointed now, I didnt know the Beatles version of Twist and Shout was a cover, it was one of very few of theirs that I liked.

Another oldie I think is up there is The Animals - House of the rising sun - I dont think I got the title right, but you know which one I mean, very eerie, like The Stones Paint it Black.

Even though its not a rock song, another worth a mention is the Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody - I reach for the tissues every time I hear that song, when I finally saw the video I half expected that the little one had his valuables in a vice to get his voice so high. ;)

I think he means Use By Date.

Although I have no idea what that has to do with this topic.

Just another one of Somerled's attempts to show he is better then the rest of us. Too bad for him that it always falls flat and has the opposite effect! :loling: :loling:

Many of the Beatle's early hits were covers. Like many other white artists, they covered hits by black artists.

Please Mr. Postman - The Marvelettes
Roll Over Beethoven, Rock & Roll Music - Chuck Berry
You Really Got a Hold on Me - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
Long Tall Sally - Little Richard

They also covered white artists on several records as well. It was common practice back then.
