Ronald Reagan Jr. to Speak at Democratic National Convention
Kerry-Edwards Vision Appealing to Independents

July 12, 2004

For Immediate Release
Washington, D.C.

The Kerry-Edwards campaign announced today that Ronald Reagan Jr. has accepted an invitation to speak at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. An Independent, Reagan’s participation is the latest example of the campaign’s commitment to reaching out to individuals from all parts of the political spectrum.

“Like the American people, Ronald Reagan Jr. knows that our country can do better than it has under George W. Bush – that if we have responsible leaders who stand up for our values, we can build an America that is stronger at home and respected abroad,” said Kerry-Edwards Campaign Manager Mary Beth Cahill. “His appearance at the Democratic convention also demonstrates the strong appeal of the optimistic Kerry-Edwards vision, and we will continue to reach out to individuals from all political backgrounds as this campaign to build a stronger America continues.”

Underscoring the Kerry-Edwards commitment to never put ideology ahead of sound science, Ronald Reagan Jr. will speak to the need to make stem cell research a national priority. Today, more than 100 million Americans have illnesses that could one day be cured or treated with stem-cell therapy, and Ronald Reagan Jr. understands more than anyone that we must lift the barriers that stand in the way of science. 24,

Are posters allowed to discuss and debate the passages that are posted here? I'm asking because I thought there was a rule somewhere (in certain threads) that we have a 'hands-off' policy. Thanks. :)

^^Fes,

There is a hands off policy. You can post anything positive that supports Kerry and/or his campaign, but no debating of issues or posting anything that would be considered negative toward Kerry. You would have to start a new thread to debate anything that has been brought up on this thread. :)

24,

Thanks. So it was a valid question to ask. (For the record, it would not have been a Kerry bash, as it is not my nature to do such things. ;))

Democrats Announce Thematic Framework for 2004 Convention

Four Days to Focus on the Kerry-Edwards Vision For a Nation ‘Stronger at Home, Respected in the World’
July 13, 2004

Washington, DC – The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) today unveiled the thematic framework for the 2004 Democratic National Convention, which will take place July 26-29 in Boston, MA.

“The 2004 Democratic Convention will tell the life stories of John Kerry and John Edwards to the nation – the story of their lifetime of service to the nation and fight for average Americans, and their vision for a stronger and more secure America,” said Governor Bill Richardson, Permanent Chair of the 2004 Convention. “We believe in a nation that is ‘Stronger at Home, Respected in the World,’ and this Convention will showcase the team that Americans can trust to always be on their side to achieve that goal.”

“Throughout his life, John Kerry has answered the call to duty with patriotism and resolve,” said Governor Jeanne Shaheen, Chair of Kerry-Edwards for President and a Convention Vice-Chair. “During this Convention, we will tell the story of his lifetime of strength and service and how, with John Edwards, he will put those values to work for all Americans.”

Using speakers, videos, and other programmatic elements, organizers will amplify several themes over the course of the four-day Convention. The following is a partial speakers list.

Monday, July 26
The Kerry-Edwards Plan for America’s Future
The opening night of the Convention will highlight the Kerry-Edwards plan to make America strong at home and respected in the world. John Kerry and John Edwards believe that a stronger America begins with a strong economy and a growing middle class, health care that’s affordable and available for all, and a nation that is free and independent of Mideast oil. John Kerry and John Edwards also know that to be strong at home, America must be respected in the world. As President and Vice President, John Kerry and John Edwards will strengthen our military and lead strong alliances.

On Monday, featured speakers will highlight key elements of the Kerry-Edwards optimistic plan for America’s future, including: Representative Stephanie Tubbs-Jones of Ohio who will talk about the plan to create new and better jobs at home and a stronger economy for the middle class, Representative Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin who will discuss the plan to create affordable and available health care for all Americans, and Representative Bob Menendez of New Jersey who will discuss the Kerry-Edwards’ plans to strengthen America’s position in the world.

Former Vice President Gore and Former President Carter will speak Monday as well as Former President Clinton who will outline John Kerry’s proven leadership, real experience and optimistic vision to strengthen America.

Tuesday, July 27
A Lifetime of Strength & Service
John Kerry’s life reflects strength, character, and sense of duty and honor. These values reflect the type of leader he has been throughout his life, and will be as President of the United States.

On Tuesday, speakers will talk about John Kerry’s lifetime of strength and service. Speakers including Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, Christie Vilsack of Iowa and Governor Janet Napolitano of Arizona will talk about John Kerry and John Edwards’ service to the nation and fight for average Americans.

Teresa Heinz Kerry will speak Tuesday evening.

Wednesday, July 28
A Stronger More Secure America
John Kerry and John Edwards have the strength of character and toughness to lead America during difficult times and a plan to keep us safe. They will protect America by building a strong military and strengthening international alliances, and they will protect us at home by improving homeland security and by supporting our police, firefighters and other first responders. John Kerry and John Edwards know that an America respected in the world is an America safer at home.

Featured speakers who will highlight the Kerry-Edwards path to a strong and more secure America include: Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico; Mayor Martin O’Malley of Baltimore, Maryland; and Retired Marine Lt. Col. Steve Brozak of New Jersey.

Vice Presidential nominee Senator John Edwards will address the Convention on Wednesday evening. Elizabeth Edwards will introduce her husband.

Thursday, July 29
Stronger at Home, Respected in the World
On Thursday evening, John Kerry will address the nation. He will tell the American people that, as president, he will face the nation’s challenges head on and work on behalf of all Americans to build an America that is stronger at home, and respected in the world. He will also talk about his optimistic vision to build a stronger America, and his commitment to the values that make America great, including working hard and playing by the rules, and strengthening faith, family and freedom throughout our nation.

Preceding John Kerry and playing an important role will be his Swift Boat Crewmates, who have stood by Kerry for more than 30 years since Kerry lead them through the dangerous waters of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. Jim Rassman, the Green Beret that John Kerry rescued by pulling him out of a river in Vietnam under enemy fire, will also speak about John Kerry’s tested leadership, strength of character and lifetime of service to the nation. These men will speak to Kerry’s ability to lead America during difficult times and to make America stronger at home and respected in the world.

John Kerry’s daughters, Alex and Vanessa Kerry and two step sons, Chris and Andre Heinz, will also play a role in Thursday night’s program. They will speak about John Kerry as a father and role model that taught them the importance of serving your country and fighting for the ideals that make this nation great.

The Honorable Max Cleland, one of the men that know John Kerry best, will introduce him on Thursday night. Senator Cleland will talk about his friend as a commander in chief that has been tested on the battlefield and that can be trusted to lead America to safer and stronger times.

The 2004 Democratic Convention will take place at the FleetCenter in Boston. For regularly updated Convention information visit www.dems2004.org. Link

Barack Obama to Deliver Keynote Address at 2004 Democratic National Convention
Obama to Speak Tuesday Evening, July 27

July 14, 2004

For Immediate Release
Washington, DC

Posted ImageThe Kerry-Edwards campaign announced today that Barack Obama, Illinois state senator and the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, will deliver the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, July 27.

“Barack is an optimistic voice for America and a leader who knows that together we can build an America that is stronger at home and respected in the world,” said Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry. “He understands the importance of building an economy that lifts up families and expands opportunity, and I’m honored that he has accepted the invitation to deliver the keynote address.”

“I am honored and humbled to deliver the keynote address at this year’s Democratic National Convention and look forward to sharing with America the hopes and dreams of so many people throughout Illinois that I have met during this campaign,” said Obama. “America is excited about the new direction our country can take under the leadership of John Kerry and John Edwards, and I am ready to work with them to make it happen.”

Obama will talk about his hope for America and the new direction for this country the Kerry-Edwards ticket offers. He will speak to the need for a stronger America that puts jobs, families and communities first. He will also highlight the importance of Americans dedicating their lives to serving their community and their country.

“Barack Obama is an accomplished public servant and a leader in the Democratic Party,” said Alice Huffman, DNCC Chairwoman. “He is addressing the most diverse convention in Democratic party history. The breadth and diversity of the delegates to this year’s national convention demonstrates the broad appeal of the Kerry-Edwards ticket.”

Like John Kerry, Barack Obama has spent a lifetime fighting for working families. As a civil rights attorney, community organizer, and leader in the Illinois State Senate he has served America as an innovative leader, bringing new solutions, shared values and an optimistic vision. Obama was the driving force behind a state Earned Income Tax Credit, which has provided over $100 million in tax cuts to working families, reformed welfare, extend health coverage to uninsured children and families, and brought down the cost of prescription drugs for seniors.

According to statistics compiled by the Democratic National Committee, 39.1 percent of the 4,341 delegates to this month’s Convention in Boston are minorities. More African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Native-Americans, and Hispanics will attend the Convention than ever before. Link

A little bit about the Candidate's Wives...

Part I
About Teresa Heinz Kerry
Posted ImageTeresa Heinz Kerry brings an extraordinary range of experience and talent to the campaign trail for her husband. She has been deeply involved with a number of issues that are equally important to her husband, including the environment, children, women's issues, and health care and wellness. She has been an outspoken advocate for human rights, and a strong supporter of the arts.

Born in Mozambique, fluent in five languages, she has combined compassion and common sense to become a force for innovation and social progress as leader of one of the nation's largest private foundations. After studying in South Africa and Switzerland, she moved to the United States to work for the United Nations. In 1966, she married Senator John Heinz, with whom she had three sons. Shortly after celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in 1991, she lost her husband in a plane crash.

Turning down offers to run for her husband's Senate seat, she became chair of The Howard Heinz Endowment and the Heinz Family Philanthropies. Under her leadership, the Heinz foundations are widely known for developing innovative strategies to protect the environment, improve education and the lives of young children, broaden economic opportunity, and promote the arts.

She started advocating for women early, attending the first meeting of the Women's Political Caucus in Pennsylvania in 1972. She established the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement in 1996 to educate women about pensions, savings, and retirement security.

Their mutual interest in environmental issues brought Teresa and John together. She was first introduced to John Kerry by Senator Heinz at an Earth Day rally in 1990. In 1992, she ran into Kerry at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where she was representing U.S. non-governmental organizations. In 1993 they began dating, and were married in the presence of her three sons and his two daughters on Memorial Day weekend in 1995.

Teresa has received numerous awards and 10 honorary degrees for her many works. In September of last year, she was presented with the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal for Humanitarianism, for her work protecting the environment, promoting health care and education and uplifting women and children throughout the world. She was recently elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

In addition to her three sons and two step-daughters, Teresa is the almost inordinately (but understandably) proud grandmother of one grandchild. LINK

About Elizabeth Edwards

Elizabeth Anania Edwards is the daughter of a decorated Navy pilot, and was born on July 3, 1949. In her early years, she attended school in Japan, where her father was stationed with a reconnaissance squadron, flying missions over China and North Korea.

Posted Image As an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mrs. Edwards majored in English, and graduated from UNC Law School in May 1977. She married John Edwards on July 30th, the Saturday after taking the bar exam.

Following law school, she clerked with U.S. District Court Judge Calvitt Clarke, Jr. in Norfolk, Virginia. She worked for the North Carolina Attorney General's office in the early 1980s where she did work for the Department of Natural Resources and Community Development and helped with the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act.

Mrs. Edwards has worked at the Raleigh law firm Merriman, Nicholls, and Crampton, taught legal writing as an adjunct instructor at UNC Law School, and was a member of the first group of Public Fellows at the College of Arts and Sciences at UNC.

Mrs. Edwards believes in giving back to her community. She has volunteered with the Parent Teacher Associations at her children's schools, and has been active in their youth soccer leagues. Additionally, she volunteered at Goodwill Industries, working in the book room of their thrift store.

In 1992, John and Elizabeth Edwards established the Vincent J. Anania Lacrosse Scholarship in honor of Elizabeth's father, a former lacrosse player and Assistant Coach at UNC-Chapel Hill.

In 1996, they helped establish the Wade Edwards Foundation in honor of their son, and helped build a computer learning center - the Wade Edwards Learning Lab - for young people in Raleigh. The Wade Edwards Foundation also runs a statewide short fiction contest for North Carolina's high school juniors, awarding $10,000 a year in scholarships and grants to high school English programs. Mrs. Edwards volunteered at the lab nearly every day, until the family came to Washington following John Edwards' 1998 election to the U.S. Senate.

John and Elizabeth are the proud parents of four children: Cate, a recent graduate of Princeton University, a 6-year-old daughter, Emma Claire, and a 4-year-old son, Jack. Their first child, Wade, died in 1996.

Despite the demands of raising two young children, Mrs. Edwards still finds time to participate in community service. She remains active in the Wade Edwards Foundation, and is involved in a variety of charitable efforts, including fundraising for the March of Dimes benefit. She also serves on several boards, including the UNC Board of Visitors and Books for Kids. LINK

Kerry and Edwards to Blaze America’s Freedom Trail to Boston Convention
Journey from Kerry’s Birthplace to the Birthplace of America

July 19, 2004

For Immediate Release
Washington, DC

Highlighting the optimistic spirit and values that built America over a seven-day journey to the Democratic National Convention, John Kerry will travel from his birthplace to the birthplace of America on his way to accepting the Democratic Party’s nomination for President, the Kerry-Edwards campaign announced today.

Posted ImageAs Kerry blazes a trail through cities that symbolize America’s spirit and values, his running mate John Edwards will do the same, echoing the Kerry-Edwards commitment to stand up for middle-class values and build an America that is stronger at home and respected in the world.

Kerry and Edwards will make stops in historically significant cities that exemplify America’s can-do spirit, Kerry’s lifetime of service and strength and the values that built America – the values John Kerry and John Edwards will fight for in the White House. Locations Kerry will visit include: Kerry’s birthplace Aurora, CO; Sioux City, IA; Columbus, OH; Cape Canaveral, FL; Norfolk, VA; Philadelphia, PA; and America’s birthplace, Boston. Edwards and family will join Kerry in Aurora, before breaking off for their own tour through Milwaukee, WI and his home state of North Carolina en route to Boston for his Wednesday speech.

“This tour so clearly showcases the optimism and spirit that is at the heart of America and the Kerry-Edwards belief that for the can-do people of this country, tomorrow will always be better than today,” said Kerry-Edwards campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill. “As they prepare to accept their party’s nominations, John Kerry and John Edwards will visit the places and the people that symbolize the values that built this country and the values that will make us stronger again, as well as the lifetime Senator Kerry has spent serving his country and the strong leadership he will bring to the White House.”

Kerry’s journey will conclude Thursday in Boston – the birthplace of America’s freedom and democracy -- where he will accept his party’s nomination in a prime-time speech. Edwards’ trip finishes Wednesday when he will formally accept the Vice Presidential nomination.

Veterans will play a prominent role in Kerry and Edwards’ journey across the country. Kerry and Edwards will be joined at every stop by veteran supporters and delegates. This reflects the unparalleled and unprecedented role veterans will play at this year’s convention.

Kerry and Edwards will also be surrounded by family, friends and every day Americans who represent America’s spirit in action.

Like the days of the convention, each day of Kerry and Edwards’ trips will highlight values that are at the core of America and at the core of the Kerry-Edwards plan to make us stronger at home and respected abroad. LINK
